Just wish I could use the excuse for guitars that I use for fly fishing rods.

Brought a new rod home once and my wife asked how many I needed. Told her I wanted a pile large enough that I could add another without her noticing.

With guitars that would be one heck of a pile.

My playing friends and my work peeps know I keep two or three in the living room to play “on the daily”.
My total is a dozen at the moment.
My wife knows within about two guitars how many I have.
I usually know within one guitar.
Sometimes I’m off because the guitarsenal tends to be in flux.

Ask me that question and I'll go on and on about each individual guitar. So you better hope I only have a few. Because I may never shut up.

And yes, my wife approves all purchases. Mostly.

What am I missing here? What is inappropriate about asking how many guitars you have? It seems that over half of the forumites here, including the OP, list their guitars in their sig, so it doesn't seem to be a closely held secret.

When I'm asked how many horses my wife has I have to think about it.

My wife knows exactly how many instruments I own, and could probably tell an enquirer as much about them as I could.

Since we ‘got together’ in 1995, she’s actively encouraged every purchase - hell, she even bought a couple of them as gifts for me - and has counselled me on the wisdom of selling the ones I’ve sold.

I have some nice guitars, I’ve had some others that I moved along, and I have a beautiful, wonderful wife who I’ll never let go. I’m a lucky, happy guy. ❤️

My partner had mentioned that I have enough that she would not notice a new one, but... one followed me home and it was immediately spotted.

I like to rotate them around the apartment to keep everyone confused ;-)
Hopefully in the next year I'll move someplace to have a dedicated office/music room.

(8 guitars, 2 banjos, 2 mandolins, 2 ukes (for now))

My wife is completely supportive and has no idea how many guitars we have in the house. She knows it's probably more than 10, but not exactly sure what the correct number is, which is fine with both of us. It's actually become a running joke with us, and she completely encouraged each of my three 2019 guitar purchases.

Talking trash is part of the charm, and it’s pretty much all in-jest and good humor. It’s just I think every guy or gal has that hobby, interest or passion that we spend just a shade more of our disposable income on than we should...and it’s an easy conversation piece for our buddies to needle us about in the absence of real conversation or a good icebreaker at ‘non-mandatory yet mandatory’ work events. We all do it to a degree I think...Whether it’s golf, Grandkids, guns, boats, charities, clothing, or race cars... Hobbies, interests, and passions give us identity and that’s a cool thing and may be the thing that grows your work social circles in your favor.
