In terms of playing music, one thing I've learned is to appreciate every band practice AND performance, in of itself. Back when I was pursing music as a full-time job, I always thought of all of those hours of band rehearsals and crummy gigs as "I'm just paying my dues" and "This is just a stepping stone to a better, bigger, more important gig." Now that I'm in my 40's, I try to enjoy each and every practice and gig that my current band has, and I have no expectations of it leading to anywhere more important. I don't care about being "known" in the industry anymore, and I've even stopped working so hard trying to get our current band gigs. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

Other things I appreciate as I get older:

Every day I wake up WITHOUT a backache.
Summer.
Sleeping in my own bed every night.
Being able to go on vacation from time to time.
My kids being at a really fun age right now (ages 12, 9, and 7).
Being able to pay someone to mow my yard (I'm not rich, and he's cheap).
Watermelon.
Having a car with working A/C.
Healthy parents.

I've learned to appreciate family, good health, our freedoms, doing good things for others and that ignorance is indeed blissful! Turn off, tune out and drop out.

Default Happy Mid-50's

Went to eye doctor this morning: no cataracts, glaucoma, or macular deg. - just "real" glasses. Appreciate insurance through work and enough money to pay the difference. Good health, wonderful lady in my life, guitars & amps I like, peace & quiet, mortgage almost paid off, job I like, and not having to deal with people I don't want to. Thankful for every day.

Things I appreciate more as I get older include
  • the opportunity of getting older - Don't laugh. Back in college, some friends and I decided to go get some pizza after a long play rehearsal, and piled into a VW Beetle. Just on the edge of campus, I suddenly decided to get out and go study, on a Friday night! In less than 15 minutes I was at the scene of an accident, identifying the bodies of my friends. One survived, but his life was never the same.
  • the opportunity to encourage, train, and mentor young people
  • the opportunity to continue learning new things, especially since I don't face a "final" at the end of the semester
  • my wife - Don't laugh! Next week we will celebrate 45 years as husband and wife, and I am truly grateful for her agreeing to travel this life with me!
  • terrible "Dad Jokes" - Did you know that I just sold my prize homing pigeon on Craig's List? For the 18th time?

Good Beer. I don't care what style you prefer, I bet you know where to get a great pint.

So many things but first and foremost is having a mind to be thankful...that I don't take things for granted
I tend to go out of my way and a little overboard thanking folks for any and every little thing they do for me
Salvation (I hope that doesn't get me kicked out)
Getting more and more patient
Being able to find a positive in just about any circumstance
Let me stop...there's just so much...

Almost everything! Things I can do and get to do and things I don't do and don't have to do.

Working on a geri-psych ward and watching my MIL slowly die from Fronto-temporal dementia, I am thankful everyday my mind works.

Fresh air, sunshine, rain.

My wife of 20 years. My 39 and 32 year old 'kids.' my granddaughters. My dogs. That my 87 year old mother is still on this side of the sod.

My relatively good health.

Saturday afternoon naps.

The value of time. Sometimes we get so into our quest of making money and being successful and buying things, that we forget that the best time spent is making memories with loved ones. “I wish I spent more time making money” said nobody on their death bed.

Those days when my lower back is not as sore as usual. I have not experienced pain-free lower back in well over ten years. It truly is a blessing when it’s not as sore as usual.

Having a wife that puts up with me. Someone give that lady a medal.

Being alive in general, and still having all my limbs, fingers and toes. Done a lot of stupid stuff in my younger years, it truly is a miracle I’m still here.
