Default Drive (over drive) Effects Pedal

I just scored an MXR Double Drive from my local GC used for $69, and after a few jam sessions with it, I wonder how I ever made it so far in playing without a drive pedal. Wow. No turning back, now.

Congrats! You don’t have to crank an overdrive to appreciate it either. I use an Angry Charlie and it’s great low or high gain. I am trying to stick with one - I know people with overdrive obsession syndrome who have 8.

Glad you posted this thread, thanks. I'm looking for one pedal with two footswitches...one for overdrive and one for distortion...any suggestions?

Congrats! How are you using the drive? As a solo boost or always on for rhythm etc? I now enjoy using it always on for rhythm.

So far, always on for rhythm. My pedal board is setup so I can run direct into a PA system with no amp; I have a tube preamp, so I get some grit from that if it's cranked, but with the drive, the tube pre gets going a little sooner now.

I can't wait to try it through my tube amp.

Overdrive can really add some fantastic overtones when dialed in correctly. I’ve had my fair share of them from tube screamers, to a Bogner “Blue Ecstacy”, the soul food (a great “Klon” style overdrive), and many....many more.

As of late I’ve come to love my JHS Archer Ikon and Morning Glory. For me, transparency is key when it comes to overdrives.

Enjoy exploring the “new world” of overdrives. Lord knows there’s a plethora of them to chose from.

With my Gretsch I love how it sounds with my EP Booster alone.

The Archer overdrives are definitely good for “transparent” overdrive. I went with the Angry Charlie because I like a more overdriven sound sometimes, plus it covers the Blues Driver territory when dialed back.

Oddly enough I’ve never used an EP booster. I’ve heard/read great things about them. Now I have to buy one to try with my Gretsch...

Are you pre or post OD on your EP placement?

When I play lead I will perhaps about 1/2 the time, use my "Soul Driven" pedal by Exotic. Usually only about 1/3 setting on the gain. For just a mellow boost/drive effect .

Overdrive pedals....which soon lead to distortion and fuzz. Old standbys will sound most familiar to you....Boss Blues Driver and OD pedals along with Full Tone's OCD. These where used on countless recordings.
Then you could go down a path of boutique pedals....Keeley and Wampler as good examples of quality products....but can be pricey.
Its a slippery slope once you go down the stomp box path.....but enjoyable.

Buying quality only hurts once.

So many guitars:

If I had only could keep one in each "catagory": Martin custom D-28, Fishman Loudbox Artist, Gibson R8(electric), Freidman Mini Dirty Shirley, Keeley Caverns, Wampler Euphoria

I have the EP Booster last. It makes every pedal seem bigger. It can take the Big Muff a bit too far so they tend to only play together if I want something Jack White-ish. Otherwise it’s typically on. It just sounds great with the Gretsch by itself turned up a bit.

I’d like to find a more tame fuzz sound. I can kind of do it with the OD. But “tame” isn’t what the Big Muff does.

My distortion is a Sovereign by Wampler. It doesn’t sound like a lot of others. It isn’t over the top at all if the amp is clean. Also great with the Gretsch! But what isn’t?

After acquiring a Chandler Tube Driver 20+ years ago, Analog Man, and Blues Driver, I finally settled on a Zen Drive. I use it with a Boss Fender Reverb( no longer made but prices rising in the used market) along with a Strat and SG into a late 50s Tweed Deluxe.
