Default Bespoke Build : Drew Heinonen SJ Cedar/Indian RW : Fine Luthiers

Hi, Folks

We've got a bespoke build going on with Drew in the current batch. Some new aesthetic appointments were ordered for this build.
Hopefully, this thread can help folks who plan to commission a Heinonen SJ.

The client got a great impression of Drew's work after he tested the Cedar/Cocobolo SJ at our showroom.
He re-visited a few times and decided to go for a Cedar/Indian RW SJ. The client has no doubt about the tone then he tried to achieve a specific look for this SJ.

Here is the spec we nailed together for this build.

Spec

Body - SJ with Florentine Cutaway
Top - Western Red Cedar
B/S - East Indian Rosewood
Rosette - Radial Wood Rosette (Cocobolo)
Backstrip - Wood Accent (Cocobolo)
End Wedge - Wedge(Cocobolo) + Wood Accent strips (Cocobolo) + W/B/W Purfling
Top Purfling - Wood Accent (Cocobolo)
B&S Purfling - W/B/W
Binding - Cocobolo
Neck - 5piece neck (Olson neck profile)
Inlays - Wood+Shell head logo (Cocobolo + Abalone)
Heelcap - Ebony (Subtle Grain)
Headstock front veneer - Ebony (Jet Black)
Headstock back veneer - Ebony (Subtle Grain)
Truss rod Cover - Ebony (Subtle Grain)
Fretboard - Ebony bound with Wood Accent (Cocobolo)
Bridge - Ebony
Frets - Nickel frets

The Cedar Top we selected~

In the next post, we will share the design ideas for this build~

Cheers,

Alan

That will look nice with the cocobolo bindings, can't wait to see the finished guitar.

Smile Very curious...

to follow this one. My 1st post on AGF. ..and particularly interested in the “unusual” design options as I am impatiently waiting for my own Heinonen build to start sometime hopefully is year and to be finalized sometime in 2020.
Cheers everyone, Lonzo

I’ll be following this build with quite a bit of interest. I have a WRC over EIR cued up for a build later this year, so watching this one come together will be fun.

Congrats on your Heinonen build! Looking forward to your build thread as well! These are not unusual options but new stuff for a Heinonen build~

Default Bespoke Build : Drew Heinonen SJ Cedar/Indian RW : Fine Luthiers

Hi, Folks

I was going to work on this post but it has been delayed a bit... Hope I am not too late to chime in [emoji4]

This rosette has been applied to a couple of custom Heinonen builds.

My client wanted a similar design but with some modifications. The Mods he wished were as follows;

- Enlarge the radial wood
- Narrower space between the sound hole edge and the outer rosette
- The current B/W/B/W/B outer rings > W/B/W rings

So Drew got us this mock-up photo to show us the enlarged radial wood.

Then this black channel on this upgraded mock-up is where the soundhole will fall for a visual reference. The soundhole edge will also get rounded over slightly which will shrink that space a bit more.

The W/B/W rings will be substituted with thinner purflings.

More will come shortly~

Cheers

Alan

Man that cat knows what he is doing! I’m hoping to sell one in order to place an order with Drew this year.

This looks like it will be a wonderful guitar. I have heard fine things about Drew's work. Thanks for letting us follow along.

Best,
Jayne

Beautiful woods, and a very tasteful rosette! I like how he uses the abalone without creating too much "bling".

Alan, did your client have specific reasons for choosing EIR? I think it's an oftentimes (unfairly) underrated wood that combines perfectly with Cedar in the hands of the right builer (clearly the case here).
