Using a flatpick th strum and pick out individual notes, usually in a rapid pattern. Think Bluegrass, Doc Watson, etc. You can contrast it to 'fingerstyle', or 'fingerpicking', where your fingers and or fingernails are used to play. With flatpicking, a Dreadnaught usually is used and a bigger bass response is preferred. That's why Martin dreds have been the flagship guitar for this type of music. Hope this helps.
