I play in a combo with Ben Wilborn, Frog and Toad, and I use the slap somewhat often.. When you play a 2 hour set, I believe you need all sorts of styles as not to get stale in your sounds... When I do use the slap its usually higher energy numbers etc, so I believe I need it, and think it sounds cool used sparingly...
Maybe we can add this to the saying:
There are 2 types of People in the world... Those who love Neil Diamond, and those who don't...
And,
Those who love Thumb slaps and those who don't???

As for Neil Diamond, I thought he had some pretty good tunes among the many he performed.
