Default Versatlie all Hog 00-000

Looooong time lurker finally have a good reason to post. Im primarily an electric blues/americana/folk rock style player, think Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, The Band, NY& Crazy Horse etc. Lately I've been wanting to dig more into delta, piedmont, ragtime styles, as well as working more songwriting. I really want a 00 or 000 body guitar, and all mahogany but with a nit of versatility.

I played a 0015 the other day and really liked it, just not quite big sounding or loud enough so I was thinking about either a 00015sm or the 00DB Jeff Tweedy. I have a decent sized credit at sweetwater and my sales tech has given me pretty competitive pricing on both, especially on the DB for about $1900. Which of these would be more versatile and cover more ground? Which would be better in a band setting? Anything else i should be looking at in the sweetwatwr selection?

Would love to hear from owners of both of these guitars now that theyve been out a while to see how theyre getting on.

Thanks in advance.

If you can broaden out a tad... Two small body hogs with Sitka tops that merit your good look are : Gibson lg2 American eagle and Martin Ceo7.

Also try that Taylor 322 all hog (I think that's the model number)

Those two were also on the shortlist. Played a CEO7 and while i liked the neck and nut/bridge spacing i thought it lacked the presence and volume I was looking for. I have not played an AE , but played a vintage LG3 that was absolutely killer, though Im not sure how the neck on the AE compares. Thats one thing I forgot to mention, I wpuld prefer a neck more on the full side.

I REALLY like the Tweedy - tone, volume, and feel. The neck is listed as a Mod-V, but I find it to be a bit more rounded and more comfortable (for me) than some other models with the same neck shape. IMO it sounds much bigger than it is.

If I wanted a modern mahogany topped Martin, that would be the one.

I dig the OO-15, how loud do you want to be???

Mahogany topped guitars are not known for volume (although my OO-15m is perfect). Check out the Martin 17 series w/ spruce tops,

I would say that if you want more volume, don't go for a 00. The Martin 000-15 or the Taylor 322 would be your best bets IMHO. Both are a little larger, and are easy to play, but have that all Mahogany sound.

Not dread loud, but loud enough to hang with anothwr guitar or two and a violin. I played the 17 series and liked them alright, they werent as warm as i was looking for and a bit too jangly. Well put together and heck of a lot of fun to play though.

I don't have a suggestion for you beyond suggesting you play some all hog guitars from several builders, but I did want to say welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!

Consider going used and you'll get more bang for your buck.

The Santa Cruz 1929 is a phenomenal guitar. Made in both 00 and 000 sizes. I have played the 00 and it's on my short list.

There was one for sale here at a crazy good (low) price for this type of guitar but I haven't seen it bumped in a while so it might have sold.

Without posting your budget, I can highly recommend the Santa Cruz OO and OOO 1929 series as the best all mahogany guitars that I have ever played. But I am a huge 15 series fan myself. I have the 000 and it is plenty loud, and I also love the 000-15SM. Go try multiple examples out because they can vary quite a bit. The Tweedy's are great and definitely the CEO-7 is worth considering though it's a spruce top.

Well, thats kind of the rub, because I do have a credit at SW my budget is about $2500-3000, id like to keep it closer to the 25 though. Only catch is Im limited to what SW carries so no Santa Cruz or H&D and the like...

My OM-15 is very loud.

Why are people recommending spruce topped guitars when the OP asked for all hog guitars?

my 00-15m custom from LA Guitar sales is exceptionally loud, will hang with anything and it's one of my favorite guitars,.. but it's been played and gigged steadily for the last few years.
