I know it has been posted before, but here is Bill Kirchen's own lesson for the tune:

Excellent and in that video he indicates he is using the "up- down" picking . And you can hear the snare hit BPM . In the next video that cycles "Popcorn" you can really hear the relationship between the the metronome beat and how fast he is playing

Thank you. It's great to see Bill's lesson. My speed is coming up. Soon I'll be ready to start learning the verses.

Yea, I've been playing HRL for a couple of years now on an acoustic. It takes some time, but you'll get it. Playing it live is a real PITA too, a whole new level of screw ups. I still practice the lick almost every time I pick up a guitar. When I sing the part "that's all there is and there ain't no more" it still gives me goosebumps.

Yes, so far it's been a blast to practice. I just printed out the lyrics and I'll start on them soon.

CC and the LPA were the coolest band that there ever was. Their show was like a review of every kind of music; rock and roll, sappy country, Cajun, boogy-woogy, trucker. They did it all. Besides their own shows, they seemed to open for everyone else I went to see.

I'm learning to play HRL on my new Martin cs J-17. It won't be here for 6 to 8 months so I have a good chance to ready with it.

I like watching his fingers move on the neck. The lick is part of him.

Tried strumming the verses along with the recording this morning. Holy Mackeral, that's lightning fast also!

It's only EAEB but I'm going to have to work on it with the metronome and build up to it.

And, I'm going to have to sing it quite a bit slower than The Ole Commander!

There are a lot of tunes that I like a lot but don't even try learning because I know I can't get close to the tempo. I am working on the lick to this one, but am under no illusions about getting it fast enough.

I often think of learning "Id Love to Change the World" but even if I got that lovely acoustic part down half way down, I know I could never get the electric solo to sound right.

Whether or not I do get it up to speed and be able to play and sing the song, it's still fun working on it.

I'm up to 90 bpm, today, hitting just about right on the beat!

It must be at least recognizable at that speed. I play it a lot slower, and it really does not sound right to me at all.

I think that as long as you have the rhythm correct, it should sound correct even when it's slower.

It's a lot of fun. I've been starting a 36 bpm and moving 6 bpm per try until it falls apart.

I sang it this morning. The first time, along with the Ole Commander. Then, along with my strumming.

My verdict is that it doesn't need to be anywhere near the race pace the Bill Kirchen takes us on. I still have to figure it out but I think 90 to 100 bpm will carry the song along nicely.

True. You don't have to race, you can cruise.
