Default Radio, radio

Not the Elvis Costello song. I'm looking for a higher quality bookshelf radio with good sound, and good tuner allowing me to pull in more local, lower power stations. I want it to fit on a 14" x. 9" , up to 12.5" high. An aux input for iPod/mp3 player would be a plus.

I bought a Crosley CR 4 a few years back but the sound isn't that good and it seems to only pull in Clear Channel pop.

If you can handle technology I'd get a Sonos Play 1. It will open the door to thousands of music channels and stations. All free and some commercial free. You can play your iTunes library as well. Good luck, BTW yes I own several Sonos products.

Confession: The Tivoli gets used a lot less these days because we have a Bose SoundLink Mini II that beats it for space and fidelity. There you have no antennas and our phones seem to find the on air streaming for about all the stations that interest us.

One more for anyone with an iPhone. Apple dropped the price of their premium speaker in the past week or so. There are execs who have Sonos and that in the c suite offices. I like the sound of the Apple more than the Songs. Now I would consider that a contender.

The Tivoli radio and Bose SoundLink Mini II are priced more than plenty of good choices but I'm guessing you'll find reviews that second my experience of their being very good.

All I got are oldies, but goodies - Proton 300 with matching 301 satellite powered speaker, and a KLH Model 21. Both still sound great.

+1 on this. I received a pair of Sonos Play speakers for Christmas and have been extremely impressed. Most every station you could ever want has an internet presence: i listen to jazz channels from France and classical channels from California. Heck, you ask Alexa to play ‘Fats Waller’ music and voila!

I've been a radio junkie since the old open format radio days in Phoenix in the early 70's.

I'm always channel surfing when on trips and have found some interesting shows.

Sweet. Enjoy it in good heath. As said we have valued our purchase for a long time and for the model 1, my mother or brother still have the original KLH Model 1 my dad bought. I think that was a mid-1960s purchase. A good radio receiver is nice to have.

Another radio junkie here, having owned a long list of many types over the years.
These days, I love the Tunein radio app.on my iPad.
Access to literally thousands of stations, podcasts &c. with no annoying fading in and out, overmodulation, and other weather related reception issues.
Happy to hear there’s others who still listen to radio !

That's a speaker model, right?

The Model 21 we have was bought new by my SO's father; we still use it weekly. Her dad used to run it into a Bozak 302. The Bozak still lives in the fireplace! He put it there in the late 1950s.

There is a small station in Metropolis, Il. that plays Classic Country, it's a network except for the morning show which is done live by a young lady. She'll play the Sons Of The Pioneers, followed by Leon Russell, followed by Hank Sr., followed by Marshall Tucker.

I'll listen on the a.m. band sometimes, just because.....

If I recall, the KLH Model 1 is what the Tivoli 1 replicated or replaced in its era. They look much the same. The PAL is much the same but ruggedized, battery power optional, and a little smaller. I checked and my mom currently has a newer PAL or Tivoli. We have sort of a constant going on of same family of fine radios playing NPR and a famous Chicago news radio station over generations.

Confession: Our latest generation iPhones sound enough better where I find myself using the radio less.

My iPhone (SE) is not the latest. My son has an XR which is pretty recent. The sound straight from the phone is pretty crappy IMO. Now streaming to a Bluetooth speaker or TV audio via Chromecast sounds good. My phone or iPod both sound great through the aux input to the Tivoli.

But I'm not a good resource for new tech. I still have a working 1940's rotary telephone and an '80's vintage turntable, receiver, cassette dubbing deck and CD changer. Got an '85 Harley with a carburetor. Got some real old tools and a violin from the 1880's I still love to play.
