You want clean and warm? Look at the Vox MV50 Clean or Rock head.

It uses Nutube technology. It is tube, just not the old-school kind ( I have owned dozens of tube amps through the years). They are the real deal.

The Orange Micro Terror is also worth looking at. Orange is known for it's blistering lead tones, but with the gain down and volume up gives great warmth and plenty of volume.

There's also the AC and Boutique versions. The Rock might be too high gain for jazz?

For the ultimate in easy portability, pair one of those with a Toob speaker "cabinet": https://www.toob.fi/products (if you can get one in your hands in USA).

Hi perttime,

I own the MV50 AC and MV50 Rock heads as well as an Orange micro Terror. Through an 8 ohm cab, both of the Vox heads are substantially louder then the MT. I find the AC tones a bit brittle, but the Rock head does absolutely beautiful, warm cleans. All of the available sound clips of it have the gain dimed or pretty close. It really is a disservice to the true tone of the Rock head. The Rock is quite Fendery and provides tones from Silverface to cranked Tweeds and beyond. Jazz tones can easily be had on the Rock head.

At it's highest gain setting it's Classic Rock all day long, louder but not as gainy as the Orange. The orange is a bit warmer sounding overall than the MV50's and can also do clean and warm, just at lower volumes.

The Clean head is clean until you hit about 80-85% of it's total volume and then it starts to grow some hair.

True about the MV50 Rock demos. There's other amps that are generally demoed at high gain but turning gain down produces very full cleans and nearly cleans.

I have a Blues Jr. and it is loud, classic Fender tone. But I play my Vox AC15 far more than the Jr. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Some interesting reading here.

https://www.jazzguitar.be/blog/jazz-...s-guitar-gear/

Lots of tube amp players.

The one that stands out the most scrolling thru the list of players is a Fender Twin Reverb.

A Twin is a great amp plying for several hundred or thousand people. For small venues or home, way too much power. Think, Blues Jr, Princeton or maybe Deluxe.

Thanks for all of the much appreciated replies and suggestions.

To close the loop on this, we ended up getting a different Blues Jr from the same person. Looks like a first generation with a cream - as opposed to a green - board and a MOD reverb tank.

Early days yet, but the kid is stoked.

Congrats, glad it worked out for you and the young guy. The BJr went to cream board on version III, so you may have a relatively new one this time around.

If you’re choosing strictly between the Blues Jr. and the Peavey, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick the latter (having owned both).
The Blues Jr. is a fine amp and, as many others have indicated, sounds great with minor modifications. But in my opinion, it’s a bit stale sounding in its natural form. I ended up selling my Blues Jr. III and haven’t regretted it.
The Peavey, on the other hand, continues to impress me. It may not say “Fender” but it sounds creamy, warm, and has a good reverb to boot - just like its competition but usually with a lower price point (at least on the used market).

Just one man’s opinion.
