A nitrocellulose finish is far more sensitive to cold-checking than UV cured polyesters, but why take chances? I would also get some humidifiers in there promptly once it is warmed, remembering that the case padding is a reservoir of moisture too. Expect your humidity devices to dry out quickly for the first couple of days.
Ha!
Let's say 19 to be safe!

I'm going to wait 8 and see how the case feels. Good call on the humidity. It's getting the two-way D'Adario Humidipaks in it right away once I open it. I usually keep 4-6 in each of my cases.

Nice! What did you get?

I fell in love with a slope shouldered 12 fretter at The Fretted Buffalo.

A mint 2014 Short scale SS Adi/Hog dread. I played several of Dana's guitars a few years ago at a bluegrass festival and was blown away by them. I've wanted one every since and finally acquired one!

Feeling the outside of the box will tell you nothing. It's 28 outside my place right now and 68 in here, that's a 40 degree change. I would wait 24 hours before cracking the box open. More import, how long did the seller want you to wait? I ask because if you open faster than instructed and the finish cracks all over the place I doubt the seller will want it back.

Opened it. Guitar was room temp. All is good, and it’s a keeper.

My tech checked out out and loved it. Sounds amazing and plays beautifully. I have 4 humidipaks in there. One by the headstock, one by the heel, two in the sound hole.

I have a thermometer that's long and thing. A little thinner than a pencil. I poke it through the box and measure the temperature. I have been surprised how warm the area inside the box was in the past.

at least 24 hours -you have to be patient and you have to wait -
it will keep your precious instrument from developing checking -

believe me it was extremely hard to wait -how bad i wanted to open that box
But i did and everything was perfect -
This advice is from experience !!

That's good to hear. Is that the guitar you're planning on installing the Schatten HFN in?

Yes. I ordered the passive version. I have a Tonedexter and a Sunnaudio Stage DI on my board.

The K&K is ok, but I'm not crazy about it.

Monsum just posted an audio clip in the other thread comparing the k&k to the Schatten HFN. You should check it out. I believe you already posted there but if you can't find it lemme know and I'll link it here.

Great advice, everyone! I've got a used guitar shipping from CT to CA, which will be my first one shipping cross-country during winter. It's delivering to my workplace, so it will likely have a few hours to acclimate until I take it home. As long as the packaging and case feel the same as room temp, then I'll probably open it that evening, since I'll have to take it to my luthier the next afternoon, so he can inspect it before the return policy expires.

I just received my brand new 1935 Advanced Jumbo RI (which had rested on the shelf of an Italian dealer for a number of years) yesterday, delivered on a -1° C day, which is certainly not that much of an extreme as in other parts of the world. Just unpacked and watched the guitar fog up. Wouldn't have minded finish cracks, but apparently nothing happened in that respect. After some set-up and TLC it sounds wonderful now; happy camper.
