It looks like they forgot to sign it until the top and strings were on it, then they dangled a biro down between the strings and attempted their signature!

Perhaps that explains the strange signature. If this instrument is one-of-one or one-of-few, the story of its builder might have ended when the builder went off the air and will never become known.
