Default The wedged wedge!

So another day, another set of wonderful pics from the erstwhile Mr Kostal!

First a full shot of the back

I like this. The ebony back-strip really does frame the wood beautifully.

The next stage was to approach the butt-wedge of the guitar. As the instrument will have a pickup fitted it would have been a shame to do anything too ornate so Jason suggested simple but effective lines. Using the tapered body shape to guide the "movement" of the lines Jason fitted and purfled (I like the idea of there being a verb "to purfle"! Maybe it's inaccurate here but you get what I mean!) the ebony panel first.

Once this was finished (the miter work is jaw-dropping!) A small panel of mahogany was inlaid

Which takes the design to a whole new level!

And we have a completed "box"

Simple but effective, well, it looks simple, but it isn't! It's little touches like this and the extraordinarily clean lines of Jason's work that sealed the deal for me as far as this commission went. While I accept Justonwo's assertion that a neck is the last thing you want on a guitar, in this case it's a necessary evil. I shall post pics as and when I get them!

That is some mighty impressive miter work. The first shot I thought it looked nice, but wasn't sold on the big black butt-wedge. But man, that extra mahogany panel really brought it all together. It's like a little frame for the jack.

Jaw-dropping: That must be a pig to achieve such a tight fit vs simply dropping in a tapered wedge?

As you say, takes it to a higher level.

Cheers,
Steve

Hmm.. yes. I'm liking this one a lot!

Michael, when you have your guitar any chance of hooking up sometime so I can check it out too? Jason may have another customer soon...

This thread inspired me to call Jason yesterday and start discussing a possible future build. Quite exciting and a bit nerve racking.

Michael,

Believe it or not, I've only just caught up on this thread.

Wow is about all I can instantly come up with ! I think you're going to end up with a killer instrument - and there I was thinking I don't need any more guitars...

I'd better give SteveH a ring and get his doctor's telephone number.

Anyway, many congrats and thanks for making the rest of us drool (sans banjo).

Cheers,

Ian
