I'd give a 000-28 a serious look. They sure have a punchy tone

A 0000 12 Fret is the closest to a dread sound in a small body I've played.

I came home freshly in love with sound of my dread.

But if it were an emergency, and you simply had to get the roundest, deepest, most-mellow, most Martin-dread-like small body you could find, what models would be on your short list to try?
Have ever tried a concert sized jumbo? Eastman used to make a 15" model, with a carved back... They offered both mahogany, & maple versions... They had 15, 16, & 17" versions. The maple ones were a bit higher end...

I've had the AJ617 for a dozen years, and couldn't be happier... It has the profound bass of a quality J200, with better mids, & cleaner trebles, at least, to my ears.....

Maybe an 000, but there's nothing like a Martin dread. Nothing.

Collings OM1A T. I think instead of focusing on whether or not it sounds like a dread, try focusing on what it is on its own, which is amazing. Nothing sounds like a dread except a dread.

That Santa Cruz OMPW that Glennwillow posted a sound clip of is also amazing.

True. Which is why some of us buy something else.

Not a small body, as the lower bout is the same size as a Martin dread's is. Mid size are OM/000 to 00. Small is 0 and smaller.

I have the same shoulder problem. I tried a 000 but it was still too big.

In the end I got a Martin 00-16e and a Dreadnought Junior (1st edition). Both are excellent guitars. I was surprised at how good the Junior was. The volume is about the same on both guitars.

I use the 00-16 mainly for fingerpicking and the Junior for strumming.

When playing plugged in, you can't tell the difference anyway.

Anything smaller than a dreadnought is a small body to me

Yep ! A non dread sounding like a dread…
But a dread is a dread…

My Collings would not replace a dread either; nor any on my OO…

Why not Larrivee L or Taylor GA (xx4) ?

My Taylor GA, say 514 (Cedar/Mahogany) was deemed to replace my dread 510 (Englemann/Mahogany).

I grew up on dreads, but I traded my Martin HD-28 for a Martin 000-28H, and have never looked back. The 000-28 model in general has more bass and volume than you'd think, but is more balanced than the bass-heavy dread. Not to say either is "better" or "worse." They're all good! (Disclaimer: I also own a 1975 Guild D-35, so I can still get that deep dread bass when I crave it.)

I'd suggest being open minded and forget about brands for now (Martin, Taylor, whatever). I went through the same journey and found the 00 to be too small for my tastes (I still to feel the guitar resonate when I play it). My favorite is a Northwood OM deep body. I also like the Larrivee OM line. Neither sounds like a Martin -- but then few guitars (if any) other than Martin will. The Larrivee L bodies have a big sound and the shape makes them very comfortable.

Also explore mini-jumbos. Because of the body shape, I have found them to be more comfortable than a dread but still with a big, full sound.

Be open to new things ... explore!

Good luck in your search !!

^^ 100%

My pick for a non-dread would be another Merrill OM-18 or OM-28
