Smile Titanium Truss Rods...and Carbon Fiber D tubes

Same questions about the CF D Tubes for neck reinforcement. Very intriguing...

Wondering if any folks here have current info on Titanium truss rods. Wondering about availability and weight savings for an upcoming build with John Kinnaird. We are going for a lightweight Jumbo! Oxymoron, I know... hahahaha

I did quite a bit of research but everything I found was a few years old. I know some builders here have used them in the past.
Anyone still using them?
Pros and cons?

Appreciate any info.

Thanks all!!!

Paul

I believe John Osthoff makes his own Ti TRs.

I used the Tatsuta titanium rods for some time.
They are nicely made, but in the end I went back to steel rods.
In my case, this was largely because I need a very strong rod to adjust
my necks due to the amount of carbon fiber reinforcement I use.

I did handle a sample of the KTS double-action Ti rod which was a beautiful part, but no data on real-world performance.

Burton was playing with making rods from 7000 series aluminum.
It compares to mild steel for strength. Maybe that's an option?

Cheers,
Martin

If weight is the primary consideration, maybe consider the Allred/Dragonplate "D-tube"? It's extremely (extremely!) stiff and stable, and the neck should only need one fret dressing during setup, after which it should pretty much stay put. It will definitely weigh less than a neck with a truss rod.

To Martin's point you might also consider using Spanish Cedar for the neck wood to further reduce weight. Or to go crazy space age use a Balsa core wrapped in CF cloth similar to Ken Parker's designs..

Smile Thanks Everyone!

Thank you all for the excellent suggestions.

John already packs his necks with a lot of CF. and his multiple Laminations help stiffness as well.

The body will be Spanish Cedar and WRC.

John are you lurking on this? Haha

Cheers

Paul

I am lurking. Curious to know what everyone has to say. My plan is to use Spanish cedar for the neck.

I used spanish cedar on a 00 12 fret martin style I built last year. Seemed to work out fine, with no issues. I put in a truss rod, but it has been nice and stable since strung up last January or so,
Mike

This will fly in the face of what has become convention but why use one at all? Yes, Gibson was very proud of their little invention, but it took Martin until 1983 or so to stuff an actual adjustable truss rod in there. Why they did would be a different thread.

I've made a lot of guitars with adjustable rods myself - most of which have probably never been touched - before I asked myself why. Seems like a lot of dead weight for something that gets used, well, almost never.

So long story short I don't use them anymore unless a customer absolutely insists. It takes more time and attention but it's not that difficult to make a neck that will stay straight without one (or a ton of carbon fiber either). And the change in tone and tactile response is well worth the trouble for me.

cheers

Smile Very interesting

Thanks all!

Hey deguitars, the last two John built me we skipped the truss rods. He just loaded them up with CF and all went well. They are lighter and sound GREAT.
The first Custom he made me does have a TR. And it sounds GREAT too. Haha

I am intrigued by the CF D tube... this? http://geminimusical.com/carbon-fibe...-neck-beam.asp

Terken, what is notch sensitivity?

What a great place to seek info!

Carry on and remain musical

Paul
