Default Set list suggestions please

Hi there,
just wondering what suggestions anyone might have for a set list for myself and wife to do as acoustic duo. Me playing, wife singing.
Finding the right songs is going to be the crux of the whole thing.
Looking to play Posh restaurants, Hotels, Wine Bars, Coffee SHops etc.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Kind of a 'wide open' question! What songs do you guys have in your current repertory?
When making a gig set list, you need some flexibility - have to judge the audience, what they are responding to, or ignoring. On the other hand, if this is background music at a restaurant, then anything that keeps it 'background' is acceptable.

Good reply from Mike... a VERY wide-open question!

I don't know how much experience you have with this sort of stuff, but the fact that you asked the question leads towards the "not much" experience arena...

You will find that there are all sorts of songs that you CAN play for people... and it's up to you! From brainless ditties to complex pieces, from songs that everyone knows to obscure material.

Personally, I only perform songs that truly resonate with me, that I believe in, that I can relate to... there isn't enough money in this world to get me to play "Margaritaville" ever again! Nothing against the song, not at all; I just feel there's too much great music "out there" for me to waste my time and energy playing tunes that I've heard a million times and don't really "do it" for me...

Some folks are more than willing to play WHATEVER gets them work, what ever the patrons want to hear...

Like I said, it's up to you. I would suggest that you stay with tunes that are really heartfelt, that you can "own" as much as an original song that you've written... but, then again, I have never been much for the "show biz" aspect of performing.

Sounds like a great opportunity to dig into the Great American Songbook.

No, lots of experience both myself and wife. Though never together, or on Acoustic. New project and we are not going to play anything run of the mill.
I was looking for those special golden nuggets that someone has found that we might never come across.
For example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th4SwSpaRWU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20Ov0cDPZy8

We already have about 25 or so of similar vein. Just hoping that someone has something special for us to try to make our own.

Enjoying my cup of coffee while listening to live performance of Georgia on my mind. Oh that would be great!

I actually like hearing original stuff better than covers! I mean covers are great but most of the time you just want to hear the original singer.

Really depends on your audience entirely. Play for the audience, not yourself. In each venue, what do they want to hear? Is it background music over dinner conversation? Is it going to be the focus of their attention? What kinds of music go over well at that venue? Are you aiming to build this into a money making venture? A coffee shop is not a Posh restaurant. I, at least think you need to really put some more thought into your venues before you compose a set list.

Do a search for "setlist" on this forum, if you haven't yet, and you'll have plenty of ideas!
