Default Strap peg will not fully seat on my D18

How the heck do you get these fully inserted into the body. I bought a set of Martin ebony guide-pins/peg and it sticks out maybe a 16th inch. Tap it with a rubber mallet?

Neither of the two strap pegs bottom out on my acoustics. Martin specifically says not to tap the peg with anything, including a rubber mallet, when installing them. That direction came with my recently delivered guitar. The instruction said to twist the peg by hand as you push it into the hole.

Along with this, I have another question; is the hole to the edge pin tapered?

What size bit?

End pin? Get a small piece of sandpaper and gradually twist the shaft of the peg against the sandpaper until it twists in and feels right. This process will work for wood or ABS. Don't be hammering or drilling!

If you decide to ream the conical hole be VERY (repeat: VERY) gentle with it! - with those angles a tiny bit of removed wood makes for significantly more movement of the end pin.
I would prefer to sculpt the pin until you're happy with the fit. It is easier to start again with a new end pin if you mess it up.
Or wait and see if the passing of time allows the wood to compress or wear until it works as you want.

Do this!!!!! This is absolutely the correct way to deal with it.
