Default Looking for a little sustain

I would like the trebles on my Cervantes to have a little more sustain. Can you recommend strings that illicit the most sustain?

Thanks,
Steve

What strings are you using now. Sustain is not always a string issue. Sometimes it's the guitar.

The best you can do, sustain-wise, in my experience, is to use carbon trebles. The tone of carbon trebles is a bit different than nylon, too, a bit clearer/brighter.

Thanks, can you recommend a particular brand?

I didn't evaluate sustain on these strings, but I just had them on for about 10 days trying them out. They were Galli Genius GR45 strings. I liked their brightness compared to some other strings I've tried recently. I'm fairly new to classical guitar, so my ear is not as accomplished as other folks, but I just placed an order for some more of the treble strings today. I talked about it in another thread here on string advice. Here's the link to those strings.

D'Addario
Savarez
Oasis

I would start with a high tension set.

"......illicit the most sustain?"

Good one! I LOVE spell-check - better than the Sunday comics!

"Illicit: disapproved of or not permitted for moral or ethical reasons."

Actually, I want strings with soooo much sustain that everyone on the classical forum will disapprove of it.

"Elicit"
Either way, we could build a case!

On the recommendation of the guys at Strings by Mail, I went with the Savarez 540 J strings. I should get them next week and will report back.

Thanks for the help,
Steve

I don't know about others, but my experience with both steel and nylon strings is that the greater the gauge (steel) or greater the tension (nylon) the greater the projection and punch, but also the more percussive sound and less sustain. This is probably more noticeable with lightly constructed instruments.

I am happier with a medium tension string on my Pono for both the feel and sustain they provide.

If you have been using nylon trebles, I predict you will hear a very noticeable difference with carbon. And hopefully the difference will be for the better!

Confirming Riffmeister, I just changed out LaBella 2001 nylon mediums for a set of Savarez 540R, Alliance HT wound bases and carbon trebles, normal/standard tension. A little stiffer feel, but a much crisper/clearer tone, both bass and treble, with greater sustain. Tying the high E at the bridge gave me fits, though, as the thinner, more slippery carbon string kept slipping.
