Where To Buy Back & Sides in Canada
Hey all, pretty new around these parts.
I have recently struck out on the path of Lutherie and am working on a few builds. I bought my first two back and sides sets from www.woodtoworks.com (they are about an hour drive outside Vancouver where I live) I got a nice Honduran Mahogany and Indian Rosewood set from them. Short version of the question: Where to buy Exotic Tonewoods for back and sides in Canada? **BONUS** if it's close to Vancouver and I can see the wood in person. A little more detailed version: I would love to get some Cocobolo, African Blackwood, and probably a whole list of other woods that are CITES. I can't find too many Canadian Suppliers. There is of course Madinter and Manderas Barber in Spain and they are more than happy to get the appropriate CITES export permits for a price. I am curious as to why every supplier I've seen in the US just says no shipping for CITES products but the EU stores are willing. Anyway any suggestions/recommendations are welcome. I have compiled a list below of sources I have already found online, any new sources or thumbs up for the ones listed would be great. Bow RIver has treated me well and supplied me with very good wood.
Another Alberta supplier (can't remember the name) was problematic.

Canadian Luthiers Supply (Josh House) has good service. A&M knows the wood business - they are a hour's drive from me and I've purchased from them over the past three decades. Exotic Woods in Burlington, Ontario, is also close to me and has good inventories of instrument woods - they've grown tremendously in the past three decades and rival A&M for selection and price. All three are viable sources. Good wood is had where you find it.

Both Exotic and A&M supply all kinds of (non-construction) lumber for all kinds of uses, not just instrument materials. In both cases, the instrument materials are just a segment of their business. A&M also has significant inventory for making violin family and archtop instruments, that Exotic doesn't.
The photo of Exotic shows the electric guitar materials half of the room: the half not shown is for acoustic guitars. That is a small portion of their facility. |
