Default Scratch or Crack

Is there any way to tell if this is just a bad scratch (character) or a crack (serious problem)? I can feel it as I drag me fingernail across it but not sure if it is a crack or just a deep scratch. My initial mirror inside look is inconclusive. Any thoughts?

From what I see; definitely a deep scratch.

The break in the line makes it look more like a scratch.

The crack normally runs parallel to the grain of the wood. That's a deep scratch

I had a similar issue and would agree with those above.

Also a dead giveaway is it's happening in the binding.

This ^^^

It runs continuously over the binding and end-graft. I'd be pretty sure it's a scratch.

It's a scratch. The give aways are mentioned above, it's not with the grain and it goes into the binding.

Good news is this can be repaired.

It would be highly unlikely that a crack would not follow the wood grain…if it did it would be the result of blunt force trauma and there would be no question about it…

Appreciate the responses. A scratch is just added character to me. Bought this used so wasn’t too worried about cosmetics. Glad to hear it does not appear to be a serious problem.

I think that's a great way to see it. Now it's time to add your own dings and character to it

Yep. It's only a scratch.

The scratch now has a LR Baggs Anthem pickup. Hope to get to play it some in the next few days.

Default Scratch or Crack

I’d guess 99% that is a scratch but you asked if there’s an easy way to tell and there is. Just buy some naptha or you could use Ronsonol lighter fluid which is naptha. Simply pour some on. It won’t hurt your finish. Let it soak in until it evaporates and look inside the guitar. If it is a crack you will see the stain inside of the guitar. The stain will dry within an hour. If it’s not cracked, you’ll see nothing.
