"Real cheap" and "good" aren't congruent terms.

If cheap is the prime qualification you can use a short piece of dowel stuck through Tygon tubing and held on by a #303 rubber band. The total cost of that ends up being something like seven cents last time I priced it out.

If you want cheap AND good the NS capo already mentioned is one of the top contenders.

Regardless of what James Taylor uses, you'll be wise to avoid Kysers.

There's a lot of wisdom in "spend more / buy once" and the Shubb Deluxe stainless steel capo will give you the best shot at not spwnding a lot and being content with a lifetime of use.

Disclaimer: I own, and have used, a BUNCH of capos. The above information comes directly as a result of ownership.

I'm currently using the new D'Addario Pro Plus in silver, but it's stratospheric-ally priced at $30 and new enough to be difficult to find.

My favorite is a Shubb but for performing I usually use a Kyser because it's easier to keep handy when clamped on the headstock. Both are in the $20 range.

Shubb, x xxx

The original C1, preferably in brass, no rollers, the ones with the little delrin pointy bit.

Every guitar that I use a capo on has one. I think my oldest one dates back to the 70s ? no replacement parts all fine.

I also have 2 x 12 string versions for my ..... 12 strings.

As does James Taylor...he uses the Dunlop Trigger capo as indicated in the post you're referring to. Not all spring trigger capos are created equal.

I can put it on with one hand and tighten it as much as I need. It's so small that it doesn't get in the way.
My favorites are Shubb, but the D'Addario/Planet Waves NS is very close and it's about as cheap as one can get and still have something that works well.

I agree about the Planet Waves NS - though my NS is not so good w/my older Yamaha and Kay. I had a G7th and didn't like it, for some reason. Knowing James Taylor uses a Dunlop trigger capo would make me add it as my second capo, for the bigger-necked guitars I have.

Shubb is the king of the cheap capos. Simple, easy to use and it will last forever.

Another shout out for Shubb. Simple, virtually indestructible, not expensive.

I still use my 30 year old Shubb.
Best capo for the price.
Get a Shubb and you will be happy for a very long time.

Hi Dennis

Planet Waves NS - black metal frame (not the NS Lite plastic framed one).

This (unlike the Shubb standard) will fit & work on a 12 string guitar.

As Bruce pointed out, the absolute cheapest capo is a pencil and rubber band (an "elastic" as I believe our English cousins call it). I cannot vouch for how well that really works though.

I have used most of the brands out there. Shubb is #1 and a perennial favorite for many players. I have both the original version with the pointed Delrin pad and the newer roller version. No string leanings either way - they are both good. These days most of my cases now have the Dunlop Trigger in them. I like the easy one-handed operation and reasonable spring tension. I never got along with Kyser's for aesthetic reasons and because the springs are WAY too strong - they pull the guitar out of tune more than any other capo I've tried.
