Look at Eastman. Great guitars and some ate within your price range.

if a road trip for the two of you, I really like this, its not just a blues guitar, its any type of music you want to play guitar-and it has a lot of cool mojo happening. the black top version is particularly striking. around $579 with a pickup, cheaper without pickup.

This is right in your budget and will punch higher than it's price:

I would also say that new PRS 20 is a great option. If he doesn't need a pickup, then it's only $499 with a gig bag.

Taylor Academy series A10 or A12 depending on his preference for dreads or Grand Concert body shape.

yes, I had forgot about these. put 2 of them in use in our junior praise/worship team and they really are wonderful instruments, especially for the price. the pickups sound really good also thru our house system.

Another vote for a Yamaha FG800/830. I’ve played both a number of times and always come away impressed. These are awesome first guitars.

All great ideas! Thanks so much. This is going to be fun- usually I just look for guitars by myself. Last night we played a beautiful Pizzecci guitar. I'd never heard of one before but it played beautifully. A bit above our price range but an excellent guitar nonetheless. We're better off for having played it. You can't have all the great guitars in the world :-)

My vote is for the GS Mini. Smaller size makes it more comfortable to sit around a dorm room/apt and play while seated. Sounds pretty darn good w/ plenty of volume. Great backpack/gig bag makes it inviting to take with him outside, around campus, even on a bicycle, etc...Portability w/o too much $ risk.
We have a GS Mini in Koa and my wife loves it for all the reasons above.
I am sure that most 17 year olds would love a GS Mini if interested in the guitar.

I'm sorry to say that your 17 year old has already been spoiled by your instruments. Nothing is going to fully measure up no matter what you buy him at this point. My guess he'll be running off to college in a year or so and will take his guitar with him and the guitar will be exposed to parties, beer, roommates, etc.

My recommendation based on this would be to look at the Yamaha FG830. Yamaha punches way above it's price point. I just bought a FG800 for my son-in-law and he loves it. It sounds great, especially for the price. But the 830 is a step up in every regard. Better finishing and better sound overall. It's not going to be MacPhearson or a Lowden, but it will be a great guitar for a 17 year old who will taking it along on life adventures.

I suggest in the interim you keep him away from the good stuff so whatever you buy him will sound better than if he's A/Bing his new guitar against your high end gear. JMO

Another thumbs up on Yamaha FG or FS 800 or 830. I would also suggest the 820 version, mid price with rosewood fingerboard and off-white binding around the body and the neck.

BTW the 800 has black binding around the body and neck, although it doesn't show up in most photos I've seen. I like FG800 very much - fine action and intonation and good looks. A couple tuners have excess play but they hold a tuning just fine. I just found that Grover 102-18N fit perfectly and I'll use those while seeing what the dealer might do about warranty. For a $150 guitar I can't complain. Maybe the 820 and above have better. Have been experimenting with bone saddles, but the OEM one has spot-on intonation and very good tone.

Busy with college, he won't need to fuss with it. Retired, I like fussing with it.

Yes, you have really spoiled that boy, and now a $500 guitar is just not going to make it. He will play it, but will always be sneaking into your room to play the "good" ones.

Why not just give him one of yours? Then you can look for a new guitar for yourself!!

Go out and find him a Guild Westerly made D 25, maybe push the budget a bit. It will be beat up, so can get beat up more, won't look too stealable, will not be a huge bring down from what he's used to, and they are built like tanks. $600 should be easily done.
