Default Enough with the "luthier" stuff...

Every time I read about somebody taking their guitar into their "luthier" I want to scream! How many real luthiers are out there? If I went to Gryphon near me and had one of their guys setup my guitar it wouldn't be taking it to a "luthier". A luthier makes stringed instruments and if someone doesn't they aren't a luthier.

Except one of the repair crew at Gryphon is Michi Matsuda who is possibly one of the best luthiers on the planet at the moment! So you may indeed have a luthier at Gryphon set your guitar up. Point taken otherwise!

Yes, there are always exceptions.

The luthier thing also sent Edvard Munch over the top...

My luthier had a 12 year run with George Gruhn restoring pre-war Martin's & Gibson's before moving here. So yeah...my "tech" is a luthier but more important...he's my good friend! I'm grateful for him...

I scream when I step on a rusty nail or when the Broncos make a touchdown. Nevertheless, I share the OP's disdain for the incorrect usage of the term. I can do many car repairs, but don't refer to myself as a carmaker. Although the misuse of the term is not offensive in my view, it's still incorrect.

It's just semantics. It's kind of common shorthand for someone who knows how to set up a guitar. What's not rare is the skill to do setups, that's something I think every guitar player should at least try. Build a guitar from scratch isn't really very hard either, not in the scheme of things. Where it starts to get fussy is ornamentation, inlay, finishing work of all sorts. That's more art than lutherie, but luthiers do it, sometimes, and sometimes they hire it out. For me (speaking as a sometime luthier) the pinnacle is repair, those guys who can replace a side, or replace top without disturbing the binding kind of baffle me, that is so far beyond my skill set I can't conceive of it. But I can make a nice archtop just fine.

So if you want to, think up a new word. For a while, repairman was OK, then it was maybe guitar technician. Dictionary definition of luthier is usually someone who builds or repairs stringed instruments. Is doing a setup a repair? Not really, in my book. But a luthier is usually quite qualified to do such work. Can a guitar tech build a guitar? Apparently so, there are guys making a living assembling Warmoth parts for people. Are they luthiers? Sure, why not? Can they do a good setup? Remains to be seen...

One of my two repair guys is a luthier also, and builds some fine instruments. Strangely, my repairman that is not a Luthier does higher quality repairs. Go figure!

For what it's worth, I really don't care how you refer to the person who works on your guitar(s).

I need a neck reset on one of my guitars, and I will take it to a local luthier to repair.
