Very nice tutorial and it is nice to crack the code of this classic. Now, what you didn't know is that my wife and I consider this song and "Follow You, Follow Me" by Genesis "our songs" because they were in the top ten when we were dating. And that is dating me! But thanks a bunch for this tutorial - it will come in handy!

I learned this one in standard tuning using the E power chord and then going to a 056700 (A) and then 078900 (B) for the opening.

In standard tuning, it's a basic E-A-B-C#m progression. You'd never know it by listening and certainly by learning it using the open-E tuning. But that's the beauty of Dave Mason's writing.

Nice lesson, maple. They are some of the best on the web.

Maplebaby---
Very nicely broken down and explained.
Since I can't sing the song in E----can I tune the guitar to open D? What will that do to the fingering?

Thanks---
Bob

Hello Bob... the fingerlings will be identical & it will be much easier on your guitar as well! Hope all is good,

Dale--
Thanks for confirming what I thought was true. Again, your breakdown of songs is great.

As already mentioned, the fingerings will be identical (it's kind of like capo -2). In my case, I do a handful of songs in DADGAD. Since open D only requires one string to be tweaked (dropping the 3rd string to F#), I play this in open D capo 2.

The good thing about open D is that you don't have to tune any strings higher, reducing tension and the risk of breakage.
