Default Best way to stabilize a crack?

I have a spruce top dulcimer that has a crack running up from the bottom f hole. there is no gap at all. I am thinking thin CA to stabilize it. What is the best way to run CA into the crack without making a mess?

Use carpenters glue. Massage fully into the crack. Wipe with a slightly dampened cotton ball when dry. Then you won't make a mess. CA glue makes a mess that is challenging to clean, and is best to remove by scraping. Scraping, while simple, takes great skill to avoid removing original finish.

Thanks This is a really tight crack, wonder if I should thin the yellow glue to let it get into the crack?

You can thin up to 10%. Use filtered or better, distilled water.

It's probably a good idea to use distilled water but in the almost 30 years I've been doing this I never have. But yeah Titebond can be thinned to 10% and even less then that is often good enough to get in cracks.

You can use whip tips and special wicking toothpicks to use CA and not make a mess and it's not terrible to clean up either and sometimes you need to even finish drop fill around a crack so CA is good. But generally I think HHG is best but in a very close second place is Titebond, it works great.

I love hide glue, many times if I have to cleat something, I will simply use hand pressure for about 2 minutes and then let go and not disturb the instrument.

I have instruments I repaired 20 yrs ago with the cleats still holding, that is a testimony to the glue - not me .

For the sake of alignment in blind spots I've become very fond of magnets. And then you even get a bit of extra added clamping pressure just because.

Sometimes, I will make a plastic caul fitted with magnets, masking tape it in place, when I reach up into the guitar it takes the others exactly where i need them to be.
