Best $1k Open Mic Acoustic
As a longtime electric player, I have two acoustics-
Taylor A10e Yamaha FG730 (my first 17 years ago!) As I have ventured into singer/songwriting Ive been looking to get a really solid Acoustic for open mic. I have a thicker voice and sing in that Eddie Vedder range, so many of the Taylors have too strong of a midrange aside from the 214 it seems. Currently, I am looking at the Yamaha LL/LS Transacoustics, Taylor 214CE, and a few Alvarez have caught my eye/ear. I am open to both 1 11/16 or 1 3/4 nut widths, tho, prefer a 25 1/2 inch scale length. I’m 6’4 normai hands. Throw me some ideas to check out. I have some amazing stores locally and one that does carry Eastmans as well. Thanks! Fire off any questions. I am new here, so take it easy on me . Sounds like you're after rosewood. I'd check out the Yamaha A3R.

May I suggest that you try to play an Alvarez Masterworks guitar.
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...guitar-natural They have a great low end and they are loud.

I'm hoping their is no perfect answer to this, because that would ruin the fun you'd have seeking it out and playing allot of guitars . Its honestly fun , I found my favorite guitar by not checking all the boxes . By going out of my comfort zone , by not looking for the ordinary -looking at used guitars as well as new - not looking at price as a stopping point ( thou i believe you can get pro quality for a grand used - might take a while )-as well as negotiating or trading in .
Used can get you a better guitar in your price range -

Open Mic - Breedlove. One of the imports. Whatever they are calling them this week. One of the Concert size.
2nd choice would be an Alvarez Artist series.

Alvarez parlor has fit the bill for me.
I used to have an Artist Series and currently play a Masterworks Series with a Baggs Lyric installed. Works great. Best, Jayne |

Non-cutaway deep-body USA Ovation from the '70s-80s: durable, well-made, very easy-playing, inexpensive (you could have two for $1K if you shop around ), sounds like a loud acoustic guitar through a conventional electric-guitar amp (with virtually none of the piezo UST sonic nasties) - and I'm still using mine 40 years after I bought it...

Looking for the same and have settled on a used Epi Masterbilt EF-500-RA that plays and sounds beautiful. Other guitars that impressed me were the D'Angelico Excel Tammany, and a Guild that I don't recall the model but it was a jumbo with an arch back well under $1K

I would suggest, if it is open mic playing, what about the Martin Road Series 10e? That could be an idea for an open mic situation, especially as you indicated that Taylor's beyond the 200 series are too bright for your voice. Just a thought - I don't have one, but have tried them and liked what I tried.

Get a set up done on your FG730, if you think it could do with some TLC. Drop a mag sound hole pick-up into it (something like the LR Baggs M1) and you are good to go with an instrument you already know and love. It would be a solid workhorse.

Spend the thou on voice lessons. We just spent a couple nights in Nashville, and it wasn't the guitars, although the musicianship was superb. It was the singing.

I would find an Eastman E2D-CD. Fantastic dreadnaught tone, but sensitive too. It's not rosewood, but that cedar top over Sapele is a winning combo.
Get it for $579, put a K&K Pure Mini in it, and pocket the extra $300.

I’d go for a used American Dream Taylor, or I’d listen to newt… I have an Eastman E2D-CD and I put a Baggs M1A in it. Tremendous value…

I have been using either a Guild 240CE (about $500.00) and a Eastman E3 OME (about $800).
Both guitars work well in the rooms that I play. The rooms hold about 20-30 people seated. I am favoring the Eastman because I think it blends better with my voice. The scale measures 25". That length does not bother my larger than average hands. The nut width is 1.75" with a more full "C" shaped neck. The top is solid spruce and the back and sides is solid ovangkol. The Guild scale is 25.5". The nut width is 1.688". The neck contour is flatter and thinner, although Guild calls it "C" shape. This guitar has a solid spruce top and laminate back and sides. The electronics on both guitars are adequate for my purposes. Fishman makes the pickups for both guitars. One of the venues records video (and audio) on their Facebook page. I could probably direct you to clips of me playing each guitar. If your interested send a PM. |
