Since I may never make another "Flamenco" I want to put traditional tuning pegs on it, having always favored the purity of them. People say they are difficult to deal with, but they say that about violins too, and I know that a properly working violin peg is a beautiful thing to use, though many people have never used anything but improperly working violin pegs. Point is, I think I can get these right.
I am making my own pegs because none of the violin family pegs seem right to me, all being either to small, or too large. My pegs will have bigger grabs than most, and be a little shorter as they don't have to pass through a pegbox. Here's a photo of the pattern, the carving tool, the roughed blanks, and one which may be finished. |

Flamenco guitars have always been relatively affordable, and this one will be no exception. There's a limit to what gypsies will pay, and I'd hate to force someone to have to steal it out of passion.
I spent the day making these: And indeed, I had to re-carve the first one to match. |

I have a very nice multistage peg shaper.

What wood are you using for the pegs? Traditionally, it is ebony....is that correct?

Riff, Bruce used Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry, a very hard and tough wood). It matches the Blanca's binding.

I bought some ebony pegs to build a violin for my niece's husband and was going to get a couple viola sets in order to do a small lightweight nylon guitar, not necessarily a flamenco. I have been checking out a flamenco forum that has a luthier section for a while, I like the look of the guitars but I find the music a little too intense for me. I have seen the peg shapers but was not sure if there was another method of making them. Maybe one day I will try making some. I never thought of using jatoba for them though. I made some fretboards out of it, definitely hard and tough enough.

I have built several Jatoba back and side guitars, and it is an incredible timber. It is the most difficult to bend wood in my experience. In order to make a cutaway, I have to get to .o50", which I learned by breaking several sides.
One could make pegs on a lathe, but there is no need. The shaper and the ream come so well matched in taper I don't give it a second thought. I got coat five on the classical and coat two on the Blanca today. So beautiful! |

Is this guitar soon to be added to your collection??

This would surprise me as there's been no hint of it.
It is my hope that the Blanca will work well enough to attract a flamenco guitarist in search of a competent tool. |

I have made a tentative bridge. This is D. tucarensis. Looks like 18g when done, which seems a bit light.
