Some folks may reach the conclusion that you must be pretty jaded by now. After all, you've had more new guitar days in the last six months than I've had in the last six years. But I for one am never jaded when it comes to your NGD threads, my friend. Every single time, you treat us to a great review of some great guitar, and this one is no exception, so hats off to you, Juston. I am happy to hear that this very special Brondel has its own niche in your collection. Play in good health, you addict.

Congratulations Juston - I used to think that Schoenbergs was the best collection of guitars in the Bay Area but with this one added to your other acquisitions I think your place might have taken over that role.

Gorgeous guitar Juston. You must be in Brondel-nirvana.

That detail...holy cow that's nice.
And not as easy as he makes it look! Everything landing *just so*. So very well done, sheesh. Congrats Juston! Steve |

It IS ridiculous how detailed the inlay work is. I can’t imagine having the required patience.

Juston - wow. I mean, just wow.
Conceptually, this is like asking Ferrari to build you a custom version of a homologation vintage Porsche -- which I can't even wrap my mind around much less envision how much fun this build process must have been for you, or how much you must be enjoying this guitar...

Sounds amazing. I see bigger brother OM 45 at LC. Based on your fabulous review I'm guessing it might be amazing too.

They were built at the same time using the same techniques. Laurent told me they sound pretty much identical. It’s just the 45 is a lot more $$ because of the insane amount of labor required.

Beautiful guitar, Mr. Wo. I actually like the top. It has a fair amount of character but looks harmonious overall. And of course I love the 42-style inlays.

As with my Circa in the other thread, my recent visit to Schoenberg (my oracle) allows me to get in touch with my inner pre-war Martin. Contrasting a bit with my Circa OM, this guitar is more in line with the loose, cavernous bass I hear in most of the vintage Martins there. There is significant overlap between this guitar and the Blazer and Henkes OM-28 at Schoenberg, with the Brondel having a little more reverb and sweetness. The Blazer is drier by comparison (not better, in my opinion, just different), but still absolutely fantastic.
I believe both the Brondel and Blazer more or less nail that classic Martin OM sound, to the extent that I think I understand it. Unlike the Circa OM, the Brondel is a touch looser with a more enveloping sound. The sound is more hollow/echo-y with a significant bass. The mid range is more subdued and has more of the rosewood mid-scoop you would expect from a Brazilian rosewood guitar. This guitar was truly love at first strum/fingerpick/whatever. It's great to have the contrast of the Circa evolved Martin approach and the Brondel classic approach. Both yield extraordinary, but different, guitars. Rest assured, Laurent can build a life-altering vintage Martin clone. For those of you considering something along those lines, he's a genius.
