Default Emerald short-scale 12 string

I got a chance to play with the Emerald short-scale 12 string this weekend at an informal gig. The instrument is a lot of fun. It takes a little getting used to, but I think that in a month or so one could have some pretty convincing mandolin-like riffs worked up or it can be played just like a regular 12 string. Very nice.

Default Emerald is cool stuff

Hey Whiskey,

I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to guitars and much of Emerald's designs are pretty far reaching for me. However, after browsing their website for the first time the other day I was blown away by the harp guitar they make. It looks like a dragon from some mystical fairytale- a GREAT example of art meets function. Are you pretty familiar with the brand?

I get the Emerald Mando-guitar this week. Really looking forward to it. I bought a Deering 6 string banjo and have had a blast with it. Now to have a chance to play mandolin with guitar chords should be equally as fun. The banjo took some time cause you need to play it like a banjo not a guitar. It will be interesting to see if the same is true for this instrument.

I looked it up. Interesting.

I always regret not getting one of the Tacoma 12 string Papooses (Papoosi?). This seems similar. The biggest difference I see is that it is tuned to D (rather than A) and the the courses are all unison.

I've got a 5 course Cittern that I started out with octaves on the 4/5 courses. I've gone to unison. My take is that for picking the unison are definitely the better choice. For strumming, I 'might' prefer the octaves a little more.

Look forward to hearing you record with it.

Looks like a fun little guitar, has a ukulele quality to it on this recording.

One that comes to mind is if you happened to know the price tag on the harp guitar- I couldn't track it with a google. Not that I'm really in the market but am curious.

The recording you posted may have a slight ukulele quality to the sound--but I think that is only because of the distance the camera mic is away from your playing.

A close up of the sound can be heard in the links below and from those videos it doesn't sound remotely like a ukulele to me.

Email Emerald, as I remember it was $1600? maybe a little more, but not sure

I don't know if I ever read the final price for a production version, but Alistair stated "I expect a starting price to be around $1950" in this thread at MacNichol.com back in May. So, probably $2000 or so depending on finish, pickups, etc.

Edit: to alleviate confusion, I thought I'd point out in this post that I'm talking about the Harp guitar here.

$2000? Really? This is the X5-OS which retails for $800, $900 with electronics. Shorter neck and different headstock. I was hoping $1000-$1200 max, without electronics.

At $2000, not interested. Even the X5-OS 12 string which was custom made and has a shorter headstock--I don't think would be that much. I'd do that first and use a capo.

:-(
