The Cargo as a Terz
Has anyone set up a Cargo as a Terz guitar (high tuned to A, not E)?
Terz examples (though multiple times more expensive than a Cargo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDHnrv_SfU8#! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqnTOHo1xA0 The Cargo's scale length fits. http://www.musicaviva.com/test/encyc...se=terz-guitar Martin has made Terz with even longer scale lengths. http://www.mimf.com/archives/martin_dimensions.htm The normal deep response of the Cargo if tuned to the higher tuning and might sound very, very nice indeed. Here's an example of a scale length slightly shorter than Terz -- but amazing sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w9s_zT6fs8#! I don't have a Cargo but was wondering if anyone had done this and why it would or would not work for this purpose. AFAIK, there are no CF Terz made--but here is one ready for that purpose--if the intonation would work with the different strings used. Comments? Has anyone been adventurous with the Cargo? Kramster, I'd love to hear a recording when you do. I know they sell string sets just for Terz guitars but I only imagine they've just selected gauges that are needed. I've no idea what that might be. My X7-OS is 24 inch scale but If I found a thinner gauge that wouldn't break, it would be interesting to tune it up close to the Terz range just to see what it would sound like. I'm no expert on these things but maybe time to learn more.
I still think a Cargo, with that extra deep response--some say almost too much--would respond and sound like, or better than, one of the $3000-$4000 terz models. If so, it would not only be a bargain, but a bargain with added benefits from CF. Based on the lack of responses after a couple days, I'd say no one on this forum with a Cargo has ever tried this. Maybe it's because they only have one! If only someone had more than one . . . . . just sayin' . . . :-) New: Here is the only info I've found so far on appropriate string gauges for Terz. That said, I'd be willing to bet a Cargo could handle heavier gauges to A pitch---if they didn't break first. 9-47 string gauge range. http://www.veilletteguitars.com/strings.shtml Newer: D'Addario has a Requinto set that is made to be tuned to the same pitch, the Requinto being essentially the same as Terz but guitar body is deeper. The gauge range is different. http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDe...&productid=295 D'Addario extra lights are fairly close in range but differ string to string, 10-47. Other major makers must make Requinto or Terz sets also. Last edited by ac; 01-03-2012 at 02:16 AM. |
