Default what's a nice 0 or 00 under $2000?

i'm thinking about an 0 or 00 with a 1 3/4" nut, C neck profile, 4" or shallower body depth at the widest point. i'm intrigued with the idea of 12 frets at the body but not absolutely sold. would like something either warm overall tone with nice overtones or cleaner but with a nice sparkle. definitely not looking for a boxy sound like a lot of vintage guitars have. all solid wood for sure, but not set on any particular woods.

any suggestions?

If you can go up to $2500, you might be able to snag the Edwinson Falcon that Steve has listed in the Marketplace. The price he's already got it listed at is a steal, but drop him a PM and see if you can work something out . Can't hurt to ask!

I don't know if there are any left, but LA Guitars had a special run of Larrivee 00 Rosewood guitars built a while back.

Have you already talked to Tarpman? He seems to like those specs too.

If you can tolerate a wider nut, try to find a 1960's Martin 0-16NY. Small, C-profile neck, 12-fretter, and it doesn't sound the least bit boxy. You can find nice ones well under your price range.

i haven't, but it's on my to-do list. he's 20 minutes from us and he does have some tempting guitars.

not partial to a 1 7/8" but am willing to revisit that size if i can try one locally. being in los angeles, hopefully i can find one nearby.

The full scale (25.5) OO Larrivee I had was a great guitar. The short scale (24.75) cutaway version I have is great, even better. I haven't tried one of the rosewood ones but I'd bet they are nice. All of them are below your budget.

Yep... they were issued during the folk scare of the 50s and 60s to duplicate (or simulate, maybe) the O-16 guitars that were made in New York before the move to PA. The old guitars were favored by some of the big name folkies of the day. I've never had a chance to try one but from what I've heard, they are best suited to fingerstyle and not aggressive styles. There were O-21NY guitars made around the same time.

For that kind of budget you can get any number of solid, high quality Larrivees. Great balance, almost no EQ needed for recording and the woods are fabulous.

How/what do you plan on playing on it? I'm very happy with my 00-03R from LA Guitar Sales. Very clean and neat sounding with a hint of complexity (sparkle?). Definitely at it's best fingerpicked.

The new Recording King RP1-626 (O) and RP2-626 (OO) looks really interesting, and at about 1/2 your budget. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2gkYaUOJcg

There's also an interesting thread on these at the umgf Guitar Critics forum.
