Carter style flatpickers to learn from
Hi I'm playing Carter style mostly - flatpicking the melody while also playing the chords and am looking for pros who play this style to learn more from them. Been listening and learning from Norman Blake, David Grier, Tony Rice and Doc Watson but I find many of the best players mostly flat pick/ cross pick quick tune leads without a lot of chords. I'm looking for stuff that has both mixed together more than just lead work. Music like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dsQOAx0fy0 and the intro to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je8OzFSXbVY. Would appreciate it if you could direct me to others that play this combo style more than just lead - thanks.

I see allot of root notes used in place of dominate chord changes when signaling chord changes while picking. Look at learning some fiddle tunes and after several you may get the idea. Then you can use the same technics to play other tunes like "Sweet Georgia Brown" or whatever.

you have the wrong pick for true Cater style playing. Use a thumb pick and play the melody on the bass strings and add the brush strokes. The players you list are flat pickers cross picking. I use my thumb and fingers to play this way, no pick. Watch Maybell on the old Johnny Cash show.

Not sure if this is too basic for your needs, but I worked my way through it a while back and found it helpful for getting a feel for the style. If I recall, most of the arrangements are Carter style
https://stefan-grossmans-guitar-work...egory=33776481 You might check out Tyler Grant on Facebook, too. Scroll back through the videos he has posted an find one of ones called Flatpicking Workout, he walks through arranging songs in a few styles, including Carter... and throw the man a tip if you find them helpful |

If I could flatpick 1/4 as well as Robert, I'd never fingerpick again. Enjoy! Best, Howard Emerson

Music With Ryan has quite a few Carter Style arrangements done with a flat pick. Worth checking out, IMO.
