Default Is the Taylor Grand Pacific the same as a Martin D or an 000 size?

One of my coworkers that also plays guitar and I were talking about Taylors and Martins. I maintain that the Martin Dreadnought is the same size as a Taylor Grand Pacific model while he maintains that a 000 size Martin is the same size as a Taylor Grand Pacific. Who's right in this matter?

The Grand Pacific is roughly Dreadnought shape, but the body is slighly larger than a Martin Dread…

Taylor Grand Pacific - body is 20 inches long, 16 inches wide and 4 5/8 inches deep.

Martin Dreadnought - Body length: 20 inches/501.65mm · Body width: 15-5/8 inches/400mm · Body depth: 4-7/8” inches/114.3mm.

The Grand Pacific is nothing like a Martin 000, either in shape or dimensions.

I believe your friend is confusing a Grand Pacific (Dread size) with a Taylor Grand Concert (000) size.

Taylor Grand Pacific - body is 20 inches long, 16 inches wide and 4 5/8 inches deep.

Martin Dreadnought - Body length: 19.7 inches/501.65mm · Body width: 15.7 inches/400mm · Body depth: 4.5 inches/114.3mm.

If only... I wish Martin would make a dreadnought with a body depth of 4.5 inches with the other body dimensions remaining the same, as opposed to the 4 7/8 inches body depth that they are. I think it would make a nice playing dreadnought without too much loss.

They do make the D-16E which is a dread with 4 1/8” depth.

Jaybee is correct. It is much closer to the dread shape, and substantially bigger than the 000.

Here is a picture of my Taylor AD27 Grand Pacific next to my Martin D15 dread.

Thank you all for confirming what I thought. How this all even started is that I had told my friend (Josh) that I have a 317e Taylor and was thinking of a Martin D-12e as a backup for leaving at my Mom's as I thought it was about the same size. He thought that it wasn't, that a 000 Martin would be the same size as the Taylor. At any rate, I appreciate everyone taking the time to answer as well as the visual that SalFromChatham provided.

The Grand Pacific and a Martin dread are so close in size, that my Grand Pacific fits into my D18's custom fitted Martin case. It's a little tight but it goes in there. Which is convenient, since Taylor didn't give me a hardshell case to go with that GP. A gig bag? Really, Taylor?

I dunno, TJ - I see so many people carrying their expensive, high-end guitars around in gig-bags rather than their nice cases, I wonder why any of their builders bother supplying a case, and don’t supply a gig-bag as standard, with a case as an optional, chargeable extra.

Yeah, maybe so. I always like a hardshell case ..... Maybe it's nice to have both. I wonder what guitar players would actually prefer? Time for a poll?

In the olden days, cases were sold separately. According to this article (everything you wanted to know about guitar cases but were afraid or didn’t care to ask), it wasn’t until the 1970’s that manufacturers started to include cases with new guitars. It’s like the first company that thought it was a good idea to include health insurance as a perk…

Personally, I think it would be better if guitars were sold without cases, so one could choose the style of case one prefers. Want a 4- or 6-latch case with that 15 Series guitar? Want a Geib-style case with that HD-28? No problem. One issue would be shipping the guitars without cases or gig bags—perhaps someone would come up with a reusable, protective shipping case.

Taylor GP's have absolutely nothing in common with 000's. In fact, GP's are kind of Taylor's answer to Gibson J-XX guitars. In that case, they are closer, by default, to a Martin Dreadnought.

I think he confused the Grand Pacific with then Grand Concert or the Grand Theater.

Yes, both have their place but bags generally come with zippers, which often fail at some point. Yet still, a gig bag comes in handy at times, for instance if you are riding a bike, (not necessarily suggesting this.)
