Default Guitar recording

Looking to get a recorder so I can record my acoustic playing so I can listen and improve.

What would you suggest.

+1 for the ZoomH5. Super simple to use and excellent sound. It's so small it fits in the guitar case.

I use a TASCAM DR-07MKII for several years now. The sound is incredible, and the unit is incredibly easy to use.

I think if your goal is really about listening back to be a better player I'm going with Bob on this say get the Voice Memos or similar on your phone. Making good sounding recordings is nice too, but I personally feel it's a different pursuit, and one that can easily become a distraction and time suck. Again, if it's about just getting better, the phone can be huge. I use my phone all the time to record myself in a quick and dirty way that I can file aways quickly. I have folders on my Mac for the voice memos files for different categories, like "ideas," "timing practice..." etc -I'm constantly recording myself with the metronome on and then airdropping onto my Mac to slow down and really figure in exactly where I'm rushing phrases for example. Could just be my ADD but if I'm also trying to get, say, a good take as a perfect mid/side track at 14 LUFs... that's a rabbit hole. Voice Memos on my iPhone is probably my own number one music tool of the last twenty years..

I use a Zoom H1n - works fine and reasonably priced. I got it over the fancier ones because it does everything I need - record my guitar.

I had a Zoom H1 and did not like it. I use a Tascam DR-05 and pair it with a portable speaker for great sound.

There are also some interesting apps on your phone. I have a tuner/metronome called Tonal Energy that includes a video/audio recording button. No real magic there, as it's just using your phone to record, but it's integrated with the metronome, so if your goal is to evaluate your practice sessions, you can record yourself playing along with the metronome. You could of course do this with a separate metronome and any recorder, but having the button right there ready to push when you think you've got it is kind of handy.

Hey there Rudy4,
Can you tell me about that speaker? Will it work with with my H4nPro?

That's what I've got (but not the speaker). Once recorded, I've got to download the file to my computer in order to play it back. The sound capture is quite good though.

I related the details about the Creative D100 portable / wireless speaker in the "Virtual Playing Partner" topic I posted a while back:

"Virtual Playing Partner"

I've been using the Creative D100 for several years, but posted an alternative because it had been discontinued. I think the alternative I posted has now been discontinued, so another choice will have to be made.

I highly recommend that anyone who has a handheld or portable recorder should get themselves one of these portable speakers. Most, if not all of the portable speakers will have a 3.5mm input jack so you can use a 3.5mm patch cable to route the output of your portable recorder's headphone jack directly into a portable speaker.

If your portable has bluetooth it's also easy to use that.

My Creative D100 uses disposable batteries, but most of the newer portable speakers come with rechargable L.I. batteries that can last the lifetime of the speaker.

Lots of models on Amazon, like the Tribit Stormbox, HERE.
