Default New Brook Custom Build

Although I won't get the final spec sheet until Monday, Here's the back of my forthcoming (Nov?) Brook Lyn guitar. English walnut back and sides, curly maple binding, Sitka top, cutaway, 12 fret. Should be a fingerstyle monster. Cutaway might be dropped depending on final price but I can live without it.

Some really gorgeous walnut there! Congrats on the build. That's a builder whose work I would really like to experience, but I've never encountered one here in the wilds of Texas.

By the way, this thread would get lots of love over in the Custom Shop sub-forum. You might ask the mods to move it.

I'll do that once they get started ...or...Mods can move it now.

SJ VanSandt: Check out their website (Brook Guitars.com). Go to the 3 bars at the top right, click on 'news', then 'archives'. You can see a ton of their builds going back a few years.

Fabulous instruments and the price is incredible for what you get and Andy and Simon are great to work with.

There's also about a 20 min documentary about them on YT.

I second what Skip said - I visited the Brook workshop in February 2020, just before Covid broke, to have a setup and a K&K installed in my Brook Lamorna. Spent a very pleasant morning with Andy, Simon and Jack - very friendly, welcoming guys.

Here’s a pic of an old geezer who looks suspiciously like me, standing at the workshop door with his guitar...

Wish I could visit but I'm quite a ways away (Florida, USA).

That walnut looks great! My first custom build was a claro walnut Baranik and I'm still enjoying it 15 years later, so I hope you enjoy yours for many years too.

Looking forward to more photos when they happen.

And here's the back and sides together - wetted down to show grain.

Skip, that indeed is setting up to be a fingerstyle monster! I look forward to seeing how it all comes together! Congrats!

We have English walnut here, grafted onto local (Claro or Black) root systems, and while I have built rustic furniture from it, I have yet to see any I’d want to built a guitar from. I mean no slight on the English English walnut, which I’ve seen pictures of, and can look very enticing, as this does.

I've seen pics of the grafted Claro stuff and thought the grain was a little outrageous for my tastes although I'm sure there's other out there. Brook has about 25 sets of much plainer English walnut which I didn't like at all. This was the last set of this and I liked it a lot. I had originally intended to use figured mahogany but my other two acoustics (one Brook and one Martin) are both mahogany so wanted something different.

Looks terrific Skip. Six years ago I commissioned a Froggy Bottom guitar built with English Walnut from a champion tree (not grafted) harvested in Pennsylvania. It’s one of my very best guitars. I expect you will have a wonderful instrument. I’ll follow & good luck.

Skip,
English Walnut was my plan for the 12 fret Brook Tamar I am hoping to take delivery on by July. In the end, I opted for Koa, nonetheless, you are going to be very pleased with your Lyn. Congrats!
