Burton,

Sorry we couldn't get together when I was back east. I had a Prius full of the stuff. LOL Someday we'll talk about a build or some wood swapping.

That is an extra incentive for me to get up there and visit! I would love to see that in person-

Nice choice with the BRW appointments, those colors should look really great together.

Thanks Matthew,

That storm didn't really hit up where we are. I'm sure we'll get our share in due time!

Here is a picture of the joined back and one with a swipe of naptha;

Here I am gluing on the back center graft;

Gluing the top Western Red Cedar halves;

I've cut and selected the tiles and borders for the rosette. I'm using spalted Tamarind, Brazilian Rosewood with the brown streaking, and Mahogany from left over pieces from the back. I tried to capture some of the "The Tree" figure in the individual cut-outs. The border sticks are Brazilian Rosewood.
I lost some time on those because when you pour them from one hand to the other the Brazilian Rosewood rings so well that the tinkling sounds like rain .

Here is the assembled tile section of the rosette;

More Tomorrow!

That is just amazing mahogany. Any particular difficulties in working it because of all the switchback grain?

Thanks Nemoman and Cigarman,

This is an amazing mahogany to work with. It really is unusually hard.

No issues yet but I haven't started bending sides. I've reached out to several builders that have worked with this wood. Tim McKnight and Harvey Leach were quite helpful. I have a plan

Hi Mark - great build.

Can you tell me where you got the "Tree" mahogany from? The supplier?

Thanks.

Kevin.

This is going to be a beauty.

One thing about "The Tree" that has always struck me when I see it, is how well the figure book matches. In curly maple, the figure reverses from one side to the other when you book match the back, i.e. the curl is facing up on one half, and down on the other, if that makes sense. With "the tree" it always seems to be facing the same way. It certainly is nice wood!

Thanks Tony,

The wave in the figure is opposite when you look closely but the standing ridge figure really does seem to rise on both sides.

I have the top joined and installed the rosette today. As pretty as The Tree is I still really like the subtle figure seen in a good softwood soundboard. Here is a close-up of the WRC top. It does have a coat of shellac on it;

Here's the top and back side by side;

Frankly, that rosette fought me all day and I'm not sure I even like it now.
I'm quitting for the day and will decide this weekend whether I should just route the whole thing out and start over. Hmm Friday the 13th.
