Default "Faithless Love" by JD Souther (cover)

Linda Ronstadt released her cover of JD Souther's "Faithless Love" in 1974; JD Souther released his own version in 1976. I was drawn to Souther's more recent version of this song on his album "Natural History" from 2011.

I kept my cover fairly simple: it's just me and a guitar, except that I added a 2nd guitar for small portions of the song.

The guitar is my Gerald Sheppard GA Ave Maria.

I hope you like this -- thanks for listening!

I Glenn,
I love your version!
It is a very religious experience.
Your singing and guitar playing fits together like a glove.
This is the first time I heard this song, and I love it!!!

Hi Rene!

Thank you so much for your kind comments! I'm so glad you like this!

I do think that musical experiences and religious experiences can be often intertwined, depending on the person, of course. I often feel that way.

I agree with you, that this song is very special; it certainly is to me.

This is approximately what I played in the video: https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab...chords-2733252 I'm sure you could do a great job on this song, Rene!

Take care and be well!

- Glenn

For those who might be interested in knowing how this song is played, these are the chords and lyrics that I used in the video:

Faithless Love by JD Souther
(Capo 1, 4/4 time)
[Intro]
E--Gadd9--Cmaj7--B7

[Verse]
------------E--------A---------------E--Eadd9--E
Faithless love-------- like a river flows
------------C#m7--B7----------------A--Asus4--A
Raindrops falling-----on a broken rose
----------------------------------------- E---A--Asus2
Down in some valley where nobody goes
--------------E----G#m--A
Where the night blows in
---------E---G#m--A
Like a cold dark wind
-----------E--F#m7--G#m7--A------B-----E---Gadd9--Cmaj7--B7
Faithless love----------------like a river flows

[Verse 2]
-----------E ---------------A ------E Eadd9--E
Faithless love, where did I go wrong
-------------C#m7--B7----------------------A--Asus4--A
Too many stories, too many heartbreak songs
--------------------E---------------A Asus2
Where nobody's right, nobody’s wrong
------------E----G#m---A
Faithless love will find you
-----------E---G#m-------A
And the misery entwine you
------------E--F#m7--G#m7--A---------B7-----E-----Gadd9--Cmaj7--B7
Faithless love,----------------where did I go wrong

[Bridge]
--------------------Am7--D7-----------E ---------------G#m-- A
Well, I guess I'm standing----in the hall of broken dreams
--------------B------------------E--Eadd9--E
That's the way it sometimes goes
-------------Am7--D7---------E---------------G#m
And every new love never turns out like it seems
-------------A-------------------B-----A--B
Guess the feeling comes and goes

[Verse 3]
------------E---A---------------E--Eadd9--E
Faithless love----like a river flows.
-------------C#m7--Bm7---------------A--Asus4--A
Raindrops falling--------on a broken rose
------------------A ---------------------E---Am7
Down in some valley where nobody goes
------------E---G#m-----------A
Faithless love----------has found me,
--------------E-----G#m--A
Thrown its chilly arms around me.
------------E--F#m7--G#m7---A--------B
Faithless love……………….........mmm, mmm
-------E--F#m7--G#m7--A---B
mmm, mmm ……………….
--------------E--F#m7---G#m7---A---B---------E--Gadd9--Cmaj7--B7
Faithless love …………................like a river flows
---------------E Esus4 E||
like a river flows.

I hope this is helpful,
Glenn

I hadn't heard that one before. Beautifully done and again pristine audio.

Great choice of songs, Glenn! Nice to hear and see you playing again, too... guess that shoulder/bicep injury couldn't keep you down for long!

J.D. Souther is SUCH a good songwriter; he doesn't get nearly the accord he deserves, in my opinion. "Faithless Love" is a terrific song, a real heart-string tugger - and you did it quite well!

I did keep waiting for that gliss up to the octave note at the end, but I know you're not Linda Ronstadt!

Thanks for sharing this marvelous tune from a largely unsung, but wonderful songwriter!

Thank you Jseth!

How nice of you to take time to watch and provide comments here! Thanks so much!

And I am so glad to know that you also appreciate JD Souther as a songwriter. I do, too!

I considered doing that falsetto thing at the end of the song, going way up high, and on many of my attempts at this song, I did do that at times, but on this particular take I didn't. At my age my falsetto is so unreliable. Sometimes it works well for me, sometimes not. I decided not to take a chance when everything else about this song was going so well on this take.

So, you can see my thinking...

I hope you are doing well. My arm is healing pretty well, well enough for me to play a song like this with a bunch of barre chords, so I feel very fortunate. If I lift anything heavy, I still feel some pain, so I have a way to go before that partially torn muscle is fully healed. But I have made a lot of progress. Thanks for your kind thoughts!

I hope all is well for you Jseth!

Thank you Joe!

Much appreciated! I'm so glad you thought this came out reasonably well.

Yes, JD Souther, I think, is a masterful songwriter. And for me, I have found recently that I really like to hear him do his own songs to catch his take on them. Some of his more recent recordings are very good. He is three years older than I am, so he is getting up there, and still, he has a great, really appealing voice. In fact, with the added depth of age, I like his voice better as an old guy than I did when he was young.

Thanks, Joe, for taking time to listen and for your kind comments of encouragement!

I hope things are going well for you!

- Glenn

wow! Mesmerized by this one brother - ALL of your posts are so good and inspiring, this one for me is even beyond that. Your voice sounds wonderful sir and seems to be effortless.

The guitar, on quick glance, i thought to be one from our friend in Circle Pines, but closer look i believe it's a different builder?

And this song, as most JDS tunes, and Brindle tunes are hidden treasures, thanks for unearthing it for us!

your fan,
dale

How nice of you, Dale!

Thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment here! It's greatly appreciated!

I'm so pleased that you thought my voice sounded good on this. I found myself wishing that I could get more depth in my voice, but I didn't want to add a bunch of EQ to mess up the natural sound. So, what you hear is what was recorded -- with some reverb added -- from that Warm Audio WA-47 large diaphragm tube condenser mic.

It took some time before I was okay with what my voice sounded like in this recording. I suppose we all have this image of what we think we are supposed to sound like, and we never quite realize that. So after a while, we just have to accept whoever we are. I really am so pleased that you felt I sounded okay on this.

In terms of vocal range, this song was not terribly hard to sing. I pitched it where JD Souther sang it. The highest note he hits as a high F, which is not all that high, so it was very comfortable for me -- no straining to hit super high notes, so that did make things easier.

The guitar is a Gerald Sheppard Grand Auditorium "Ave Maria" (meaning, an ornate version of the GA design). Gerald built his guitars in Kingsport, Tennessee. I believe he is retired now; he started building, I believe, in 1991. I bought this guitar used from a fellow AGF member "Billy Boy" who needed to sell it so that he had money for his next custom build. I met "Billy Boy" at an AGF gathering in Seattle quite a few years ago and we got to be friends, being about the same age.

I really love this song, especially the way JD Souther plays and sings this in more recent years. Here is his video from his 2011 release:

I considered adding a piano to my recording, as JD Souther uses, but then reconsidered it and just left it simple. His piano player is just terrific; I could never equal his playing.

Thanks so much for your encouraging comments, Dale. I'm so glad you like my cover of this great old song.

Thank you Larry!

I am so honored by your comments! And so appreciative! Thank you!

I had done a fair number of multi-track recordings lately for my videos, and I wanted to do something fairly simple and straightforward. This song is so beautiful and so emotive, I thought it was the right song for keeping things simple.

I'm so pleased that you felt this came out okay, Larry!

I hope all is well for you!

I didn't know this song either Glenn. Really enjoyed seeing/listening to a simpler recording after all the other superb productions you have done recently. Some of those vocal notes you hold are quite something!!
