For me, it'd be Marvin Gaye, no question about it. He could sing anything, didn't copy anybody, and he also had the gift of being able to sing beautifully with female singers, something that a lot of men can't do.
A close second is Wilson Pickett. Funkiest singer ever. |

John Cowan. Bass player for New Grass Revival, sometimes for the current Doobie Brothers and his own band.
The guy has range, vocal control, and could probably sing Opera if he wanted to.

Stan Rogers was mentioned above but I would take his brother, Garnet, any day. Wonderful story teller both with his songs as well as between when playing live, and, a great guitar player as well. This is one of his best [of many] I think...

Given the manifold weaknesses of my voice, there are thousands of singers I've heard that I wish I could duplicate or borrow.
My first answer when I read the question that came to mind was Aretha Franklin. IMHO, the best vibrato and one of the most tasteful and effective singers in the gospel/blues/jazz tradition. Love the timbre too. Or one of the Buckleys, pere or fils. Lovely, yet fearless falsettos. Tim Buckley also had a wonderful lower register. I could go on and on. I love great, effective singing, and even on my best days I can't even get in the same continent as many singer that I admire.

Sure, I’d take anyone’s singing voice. I don’t have one, so anyone who does, I’d take that...
