Personally, I've pretty much misheard everything Dylan ever sang.

i was reminded of this thread just yesterday when i heard mccartney's "Helen Wheels" and considered the convoluted mondegreen implications of that song:

the song was about his car which they called "Hell on Wheels"

the song was named "Helen Wheels"

i've always heard it as "Hell on wheels"

so, was he "actually" singing "Hell on wheels" and, therefore, if a listener always heard/confused that with "Helen Wheels," is it a true mondegreen?

perchance i'm overthinking this...

My completely unsubstantiated thought is that this is either a reverse mondegren or a typical Beatles/McCartney play on words.

Reverse mondegren: Maybe Paul misheard the phrase "hell on wheels" as "Helen Wheels" and after realizing it thought it would make for a lyric.

Or maybe he just at some point thought they sounded alike and used it as a lyric. Like a song about Miss Information, the gal who thinks she knows it all.

At any rate I think it is designed to be Mis Heard, who is Lady Mondgren's cousin, and loves to use homonyms to confuse.

Continuing on with my thoughts about lyrics purposefully designed to be misheard, is a popular song on the radio. This song contains the oft repeated line, "Everything means nothing if I can't have you." However, before I knew that, and the song was just on in the background, it sure sounded like he was swearing.

But knew he wasn't as what it sounded like wasn't suitable for our local pop station. So it grabbed me ear. I still wonder if that was done on purpose.

Wow, did I get it wrong. I though it was:

Don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I never loved you.
I kept my promise, now keep your distance.

Turns out, it is:

Don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I never left you.
I kept my promise, don't keep your distance.

Big difference!

Johnny Rivers' "Secret Asian Man" and Herb Alpert's "The sky's in love with you".

No problem with the verses in 'Across The Universe' by The Beatles ... but that chorus thingy ... ahh geru ahya ...

Words are flowing out
Like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy
Are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai Guru Deva, Om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

One of the things I like about that song is I can never tell if he's happy or sad that nothing's gonna change his world. So I assume it's bittersweet for him.

Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin”.
Near the end he sings “I’m gonna” glad down over Mulholland”, or so I thought. I never understand what that meant.
It was Tom’s southern accent and the word was “glide”.

When I was little I thought they were singing "Deep-sea landing lights". I found out later it was "Dixieland Delight".
