Moradora for the binding...No doubt!
Definitely the Moradora for the binding. I think the contract with the side wood is gorgeous!

Also, Vote #5!
Sorry, this one you will have to be more like a full time luthier and see in your mind's eye how this will work out. Here are some rosette choices. The first two will be straight wood rings bound in black white black purfling like unto this: Just think these other woods. Choice 1: Red Eucalyptus (off-cuts from back) Choice 2: Bubinga (a little darker and more grain than the first) Choice 3: A simple purfling line rosette (this simple clean look may work with this model) Choice 4: Ebony (I do have some jet black Ebony that could work as a real black tie kind of look) Try to make the overall composition come together well please. |

Okay, so since its 14 fret... my choices for this round:
Scale: Long Binding: Moradora. Rosette: Red Gum. I always prefer when the back/side wood is dominant in the rosette.

My vote on item #5 (rosette)
My vote on item #5 (rosette):
Bubinga ring with black white black purfling (I think the darker ring on the rosette will look great with the dark [Moradora] binding).

Dayum, information overload!
Scale length, I'm going to leave to the other experts. I have no idea what advantage one has over the other. Binding - Moradora Rosette - Redgum however the Bulbinga is a very close second!

Red gum binding
Bubinga rosette

binding: red gum
rosette: bubinga. I would be tempted to use same red gum as the binding instead of the purling. It might visually tie in better with the binding. Ok....so I am not playing by the rules.... |

I vote for the red gum binding - neither too dark nor too light, and the simple ring rosette - option #3, I think. I also like the idea of using the red gum binding wood in the rosette, though if it were built for me (and who knows?), I would prefer a narrower wooden ring - sort of a cross between #2 and #3.

That's the kind of talk that can win you some votes. I like the idea of a narrow wooden ring. Like this?
Anyone else like this too? I know we're expanding the vote, but hey, who wants to contain creativity? I need input though because a rosette is going in tomorrow. Also, long scale is decided. |

4: Moradora
5: Ebony - though it may get lost against the gum. FYI: Red gum is so named for its brilliant red wood, which can range from a light pink through to almost black, depending on the age and weathering. It is somewhat brittle and is often cross-grained, making hand working difficult. Traditionally used in rot resistant applications like stumps, fence posts and sleepers, more recently it has been recognised in craft furniture for its spectacular deep red colour and typical fiddleback figure. It needs careful selection, as it tends to be quite reactive to changes in humidity (moves about a lot in service). It is quite hard, dense (about 900 kg/m3 (1,500 lb/cu yd)), can take a fine polish and carves well. It is a popular timber for wood turners, particularly if old and well-seasoned. from wiki

I am thinking the moradora binding would need a purfling line between it and the side. The red gum can stand alone very nicely. Therefore I vote red gum binding and then to complement a THIN ring of red gum for the rosette surrounded by purfling lines. I would consider not cutting the ring out of a slab but rather bending a piece or maybe doing it in radial wood. Since you are asking. I feel sure it will look great which ever way you go.
