Default Manzer wedge question

How much does a wedge lessen the depth?

4-1/2 - 3-1/2 for larger bodies, like her baritone and 3-1/2 - 2-1/4 for smaller bodies like her parlor but I imagine that can be tweaked a little here or there.

Smile Builder?

John Kinnaird has built me a few with wedges now. 5/8” to 3/4”, depending on the build, but I assume most builders can aim for what the client requests…

You may not actually lessen the cubic inches, as you could ask for it to be more deep than normal and then split the difference, if that makes sense….

In combo with bevels you can end up with a gigantic Stratocaster…. Hahaha

Really super comfy.

Go for it

When I do a wedge, I decrease the bass side by x and increase the treble side by the same amount, x. , So if a particular spot on the bass side is "normally" 4- 1/8 " and the wedge is a 5/8" then the top (bass) side would shrink down to 3-1/"2 and at the same spot on the opposite perimeter spot would increase by 5/8". Therefore the bottom (treble side) would increase by 5/8" and then on this hypothetical guitar the treble bout would be 4-3/4". This way the internal cubic (in") volume of that particular guitar would stay the same.

Thanks John! Just what I meant above.

Seek and ye shall have a better chance of finding…

Cheers

Exactly! The average depth remains unchanged.

One rarely mentioned advantage of a Manzer wedge is that the fretboard gets tilted up toward the player, resulting in a better view. The wrist does not seem to notice this extra few degrees of twist. It makes playing easier, aside from the comfort factor. It’s genius in my opinion.
