That is a really handsome headboard. Nicely done! That maple looks good with the bubinga. Quote:

Thanks Tom! It was a labor of love and I was fortunate enough to be able to work in the shop of a friend who had ridiculous amounts of tools and knowledge to share.
I fell in love with Bubinga in this project and have always had in the back of my mind that it would likely make a very beautiful guitar. John is proving that point here. Although Bubinga is very hard wood and splits and cracks quite easily. I am curious how it compares to the other back and side woods for difficulty in making a guitar. |

And thanks. The maple in my case had a shellac finish to move it a little more golden. The Bubinga is an oil finish so just bringing out the natural reds. |

Somehow I want to avoid black though I may go there in the end. Black with the red seems too stark with too much contrast so one option I'm considering is this Santos rosewood.

John would Bubinga work for the fretboard? Or maybe maple?

Bubinga could work. I'm not a fan of maple fretboards.
Much to ponder. I'll wait until after its bound to make a final fretboard decision but thanks for your input.

If I'm buying it lol, I don't think the Santos goes well with the top, two competing reds? How bout a brownish Texas ebony fret board? They have character and may do better with the top?

I think an ebony or other black fretboard would look great with the redwood top!
But then I am a man of contrasts...

Maybe something with golds. There are other options. Ebony would look good and the more I think about it, an Ebony fingerboard with silver rimmed amboyna burl markers would keep the theme going, soften the starkness of the Ebony and show up really well in dim light.

Looking good, brother. Here’s a vote for a black fretboard. It won’t conflict with anything, and I think it would let the rosette stand out more.

Yes I think you are right. That would showcase the top and rosette and provide a place to have fun with markers. Good eye

Black…
Another vote for Black Ebony on this one.
Even though I went with the Mystery Mesquite on my current build… Sure is a beautiful set of woods Paul

John one more thought.
The Brazilian Rosewood neck on my West Coast with it's really deep brown goes spectacularly with the redwood and coco combo I have. I suspect that would be another really nice option here. |
