Guitar Center 1, Larry 0.
I've been looking for (and did find) a suitable Guild F-212 (no cutaway) at a GC in FL yesterday.
CURRENT SCORE: Guitar Center 1, Larry 0. They shipped it overnight, it arrived today with a severely broken/splintered headstock. The guitar itself was packed improperly (in the case, full string tension, no padding around headstock), and also was sent in a Baby Taylor box, with zero-padding at headstock or tail in the box, for the guitar case itself. Thanks for letting me vent.

Sorry Larry, that is disappointing! It's incidents like that that put one more hole in a ship that is already sinking.

Actually, they will probably try to repair the headstock. It *is* repairable, but *I* didn't want to have to take that on, and the value of the guitar with the repair is significantly less. They will likely repair it locally, and I can't imagine that it will be done very well. I asked the local store manager to call me when it's repaired, and maybe we could work something out...but again, I doubt they will do a very good job. Quote:
I was stunned when I saw the full-sized case in a Baby Taylor box...no room for any padding/cushioning. I expected damage as I was opening the box and then the case...

Actually its Larry 1, Guitar Center 0 since you will get your money back and they will lose. But yeah, that stinks. Nothing worse than the excitement of a new guitar showing up then finding it to be, well, what you got. Sorry to hear that!!

That is a shame. If Ican be honest, “I” won’t be sad to see Guitar Center go. I prefer the excellent treatment I get from Elderly. But...that’s just me.

...but I feel that *I* am really the loser...it was a good example of a fairly well-cared for guitar from 1977. It made it 41 years, and then GC maimed it for life. Sigh.

They could really do MUCH better, with very little effort, in the "Used" department of their business.
Get in a used guitar? Pull off the old strings, clean the fretboard, polish up the body, maybe vacuum the case, and make it look good for the next buyer. How long could it take, 45 minutes? They ask a premium price, the buyer should at least get a clean instrument. Sorry for your troubles, Larry, that's too bad. And a nice guitar ruined.

They probably did that to mask the twisted neck and broken truss rod. I made the mistake of ordering from GC too, recently. Man, will I ever learn. This time was the last though. I have never, not once, gotten a decent guitar from them ordering online; but the guys on the phone describing them before purchase certainly were all excited about how great they were. They remind me of carnival barkers: "come right up and win this lovely stuffed bear, just one throw!" But $50 later all you have to show for it is a plastic piccolo that breaks before you can even get past the cotton candy vendor.

Sorry for your disappointment Larry, but thanks for the reminder,
I’ve got one of those !,,, a 1974 Westerly iirc ,,, hasn’t seen daylight for a couple of years now. That’ll be the flimsy brown case at the back of the stack,,,,, I wonder if the strings might have have recuperated by now ? I think the string “problem,” (so many !! who knew !?) may be why I have neglegted it for so long, that and nobody requesting “Wish You’re Were Here “ for a good while. You probably know some other tunes Larry, I hope you are able to find a suitable replacement soon. |

I sure hope you lodged a complaint, both with the local AND upper management. Then again, those folks are probably already submitting their resumes in lieu of going out of business.
