Played an all ovangkol Martin today

I liked the feel of it. I wonder how it would sound after the strings break in. I was surprised by the price also, $1,600.

I bet it looks even better without the pickguard.

It sounded like a Taylor, but with bass. Great setup too.

Nope, I've never seen one before.

I do however have some experience with another Martin Ovankol (Ovangkol) model, the EMP-1.
They were a limited run with a three piece back, like a D35, except there was an Indian Rosewood center piece flanked by Ovankol wings, with Ovankol back and sides and Sitka top.

The picture you posted raises a question about the top wood...
looks like a smoky-black sunburst on spruce, but hard to tell.

Did you like its appearance, sound?

It was really nice. The strings seemed to be brand new so I don't know how much tone was guitar or new string sound.

Call me confused. The top was Ovankol too? Isn't that kind of like an all Rosewood guitar?

I like ovankol, had 2 guitars with it for b/s.

But on the top too? Hmmm, would like to test drive one, for sure.

I found it to give a harder, sharper tone than rosewood, but in a good way. Very pretty, too.

I've actually heard Ovangkol is much more like Koa, tonally, when used as a top.

It sure is a pretty wood.
