Default Bay Scallop Season!

This Friday(Aug 16) is opening day for bay scallops in St Joe’s Bay (Florida). As in most years for many now, I’ll be in the water in my kayak well before sunrise to paddle to my favorite spot and watch the sun come up. Once there’s enough light to see the bottom, I’ll be in the water in snorkel gear to begin about 8 hours or so of swimming about gathering up scallops.

It’s an annual ritual I look forward to each summer, and I am stoked! Tomorrow is prep day, then it’s early to bed for a 0230 departure for the 2 1/2 drive to the Bay. Life is good....

...

Eight hours gathering? Yikes. Is the seabed just covered with them, or is there like one scallop per square mile?

Depends. Sometimes it’s several each fifteen minutes or so, sometimes it’s fifteen minutes without seeing any. On average I hit the daily limit by late afternoon.

Mostly it’s about the ritual, not the result. I’ve got friends who are this way about the opening day of deer season or the start of college football. Just my little getaway that I do alone. Scallops are a happy byproduct [emoji6].

Best haul I’ve had in years! The bay is recovering nicely from Hurricane Michael.

What a nice catch! I absolutely LOVE scallops...or just about anything from the waters...raw, cooked, dead, alive.
