A very sad day in the UK
At 11 a.m. the British police (where possible) and many others stood silent to remember P.C. Andrew Harper who was killed whilst investigating a burglary on the 15th, by being run over by a "getaway" van.
This highly regarded young man had been married for only four weeks, and had not yet been on his honeymoon! A man was arrested shortly after and appeared in court two days ago. One may hope that the killer might be given the longest sentence that may be given in the UK. The last policeman to be killed was when confronting a radical terrorist in 2017 in London.

A real tragedy...God bless him for his service...
It says a lot about your homeland to have so few fatalities in that profession... |

S.M., correct me if I'm wrong but believe the death penalty is no longer an option in G.B. If this is true, how do the people feel when a case like this occurs?
Don't want to start a debate on this issue since my own feelings vary with the crime, the victim. the perp and the circumstances surrounding the case. Only wondering how the average person in a not too different culture feels. Thanks john |

Thank you all,
to answer the question about penalties for murder, I had to read this up myself. It is very complicated. Of course there are no death penalties in the UK, nor in the EU nor Russia as far as I understand, apart from in Belarus (not in the EU nor in Russia). I'm no expert in such things but there is a thing called "whole life order" which means imprisonment without limit for certain murderers over 21. Interestingly the person arrested (and of course as yet found guilty) is 20. The minimum term for murder is 15 years but there are many ifs and buts. At present our focus is on the young man who died in the course of his duties rather than whomsoever was responsible.

That truly is sad news as is the news of anyone getting killed. One policeman getting killed in the UK in the past 2 years is particularly troubling. What is this world coming to?
My son-in-law is a policeman with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. I mentioned this to him and he said that he, and the entire U.S., would be extremely proud if only one policeman had been killed, in the line of duty, over the last 2 years. |
