Lighter fluid for removing a pickguard
I see instructions on how to remove a pickguard using a substance called naptha. Is that the samething as lighter fluid? Removing a pickguard seems like a doable DIY but wasn’t sure what naptha is. I googled it and and I see they are sold in large canisters. I don’t want to buy a whole canister of it just for this purpose. If I can use a lighter fluid I have in my garage I want to just use that. Not a good idea?

Lighter fluid for a zippo is just naptha, yes.

I have used Ronson lighter fluid many times to remove pickguards. Work slowly and it will remove the glue. Good luck.

Thank you. I just picked a used J50. It has a thin pickguard that is starting to peel away a bit so wanted to use that as an excuse to order up one of those thick beveled ones. Sounds like I have all I need around the house to do the job.

Frank Ford has excellent instructions for removing a modern pick guard on his Frets.com website.
http://frets.com/FretsPages/Luthier/...peelguard.html If you need it, there's also a detailed how-to for installing a new guard using water for a bubble-free guard installation. |

Make SURE the lighter fluid you choose is naptha!! Not all of them are, these days. Ask me how I found out...

Oh no, sorry to hear that. I used this and worked really well. And no harm done to the finish. Pickguard on its way to Holter Pickguard to be used as a template to make a new beveled one. |

I barely heated my pick guard with a blow dryer the. Used dental floss to lightly saw it off. Then naphtha to finish wiping it off.
Worked great |
