Default Elixir Polywebs on a CF Guitar?

Anyone try the Elixir polywebs?

I have been using the Nanoweb lights for a while, and they do describe the Polywebs as a "warmer" sound. I may have to get some.

I tried 'em. For some odd reason they are only offered in 80/20. The concept seems a bit odd because the coating is thick, so much so that you can actually see it. Makes me wonder what the reason behind not offering the polyweb coating on the PB is (ie. who has an ear good enough to hear the tonal properties of the different alloys)?

While they did sound good on my RainSong it lost considerable projection.

The Polywebs warmed up my Shorty. Now I use Martin Monel Retros on the Shorty. Warm too, but they feel better to me than Polywebs.

Yeah, the coating is really heavy on the polywebs, to the point that as it wears, it starts looking like the strings are growing hair. They still have a lot of life left when that happens so you’re supposed to just play emlike that, but I could never get past that. I couldn’t really feel it, but I could sure see it and it just kind of weirded me out. So I’ve stuck with Nanowebs and Monels ever since.

In terms of the different alloys, I think 80/20 are notably brighter than PB, which are warmer. I’d say I can hear the difference between alloys more than poly vs nano, but I just couldn’t get past those hairy strings! This was all tested well beforee I’d ever tried carbon fiber though...

The polys were the original version of Elixir.

They shed and look like they have mange after a little while. Really dislike them. The nanoweb coating is somehow sturdier, though thinner.

Same experience for me with the poly's. I went with the custom lite Martin Monels 3 years ago and haven't looked back. Clean, warm and articulate, and last a good long time.

Lately I am using PB Nanoweb because even though I change my strings monthly, covering rock guitar licks chews up the G string winding and PB being harder seems to handle it better. But if they had Polyweb PB I would buy them. I like the minimal squeak, don't care about the fir they grow, and don't think the tone difference hurts a bright RainSong.

Ditto all this. I put Polywebs on when recording, because it cuts down the finger squeak. But I mostly use Nanoweb PB these days - PB alloy just sounds better to me than 80/20.

A bit of history: Polyweb has a Teflon coating on the entire completed string, which is why they get fuzzy as that coating shreds under pick use. Nanowebs have the coating only between the windings, so the core is protected from corrosion and they cannot shred. If you can tolerate the shabby look, there is plenty of life remaining in Polywebs even after they get fuzzy.

The Polywebs are all I've been using on my GX and X7 for years. I really like how they seem to warm things up a bit, especially on the smaller body X7. I've not noticed any "dandruff" problems, so I guess I don't play as hard as many of you.

Does anyone know why the Polyweb are only offered in 80/20?

That does it! It's time for me to try some Martin Monels. These seem to be the rage and I am being left behind! LOL

I am always being left behind...nothing to worry about. They'll come back for you sooner or later.

I’m using Monels on my X20, nanoweb PB on my X7. The monels are just a bit darker...
