Default Advantage of placing bridge pins in the soundboard?

Played an AY today that had the bridge pins mounted directly into the soundboard about 2 inches behind the saddle...

The guitar sounded fine, no worse than any other AY with a traditional set-up but no better either. So I wonder what the advantage/logic of this construction is? Anyone?

I think that's a design thing for Yairi. I doubt it would have any significant impact on the tone.
