When I bought my son a 314KCE, I told him that he needed a "beater" to take with him to college. We didn't trust the Taylor in the dorm. He's got a Seagull S6+ w/LR Baggs and it's fantastic. The cedar top is dented and there are tons of pick scratches but the guitar has lots of character and a great sound.

I would recommend a Seagull anytime.

Might want to check out the Hohner "O" series...for the $$$ you great a reasonably good sounding guitar with some great looks. You should be able to find it for less than $300.

Also, check out the site below...they have a Martin D15, new for $574...

When I first bought my BabyM, it was to replace my old Fender all laminate as my "beater". While it travels well, it's hardly a beater and I'm now in your shoes, looking for a dred beater to replace the Fender. Here's what I've found:

1. Hands down, best consistent sound I've found at that price is Seagull. Fantastic. And, the cedar top model even LOOKS like it's supposed to be a beater. My current plan is to go with Seagull.

2. I don't think the Big Baby is all that great as a full dread sound. Neither have I liked the sound of Sigmas, Takamines, Epiphone, et al. Nothing that impressive to my ear.

3. Promising things to look for: Martin D-15 mohogany top dread which comes in just north of your price. Maybe look for one used. I think they sound great...certainly the best sounding Martin to my ear -- and the least expensive Martin. Also, check out Arts and Lutherie and the new Fender solid tops. I checked them out the other day and was pleasantly surprised.

If you are buying on sound, I think you'll go with Seagull.

Default Sorry but...

My beater is an 810, where my pride and joy is an 814CE-LTD.

I wanted a guitar for around the fire etc... but I also wanted the best sounding guitar around the camp fire.

I tried everything, but nothing made me happy had to settle on spending the extra money and having an 810 as a beater. What's the odd dint and scrape, it just adds character.

Default beater guitar

Don't know what they cost now, but I have a twenty-something year old Sigma that has held up very well. It was inexpensive then, probably still is.

Cool

Takamine makes some fine solid top dreds.
Alvarez, too.
A beater guitar, IMO would mean a solid top and laminated sides and back because "beater" tome means around the campfire and traveling under climate changes. The laminate s/b is more stable and durable. You give up some tone so the dreds offer a bigger tone due to their body size.
(Just "ramblin').
I am in search of a "beater" myself.
Good luck-the search is half the fun!

Check the Cort dreds. Cort is the largest manufacturer of guitars in Asia. They make many of the guitars that have other brand names shown on the headstock, some of which you would swear only make their own. That also includes a number of American and Japanese brands. The benefit here is that you truly are buying from the manufacturer and thereby saving some of the middlemans markup. As with most guitars in this price category sound can vary greatly so try out as many as you can, even going to 3 or 4 different dealers. I have played a couple of Corts that sound as if they should cost 5 times what the actual price is, most sound as good as the other brand sitting next to them. Good luck and have fun.
